DAYTON, Ohio – For the second straight week, the IUPUI women’s tennis team salvaged a weekend road split, this time by defeating Dayton, 5-2, Saturday afternoon.
The win improved the Jags to 3-8 on the season.
Despite losing its No. 1 doubles match, the Jaguars duo of
Shelby Hullett and
Rachael Bridegroom came through at No. 2 doubles winning 8-3. The point went to IUPUI when the No. 3 tandem of
Vanessa Whyte and
Abbey Neff picked up an 8-2 win to secure doubles point.
After watching Dayton pick up wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots, the middle and bottom of the IUPUI lineup stepped up.
Hullett, Whyte, and
Jesika Bays won at the 3, 4, and 6 spots in straight sets, claiming the team victory, but Neff had to battle for her win.
Neff opened with a 7-5 win, before watching her match go to a third-set tiebreaker following a 6-3 second-set loss. Despite the second-set defeat, Neff regrouped and dominated the tiebreaker, winning 10-2 to cap off her victory.
The Jags return home next weekend when they host Xavier at Five Seasons Sports Club in Carmel, Ind., at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25.
