SPRINGBORO, Ohio – Looking for its second straight win, the IUPUI women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Wright State in its first of two weekend matches in the Dayton, Ohio-area Friday evening.
The loss dropped the Jaguars to 2-8 on the season.
After Wright State captured all three doubles matches, the Jags fell behind 3-0 with losses at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots.
However, the Jaguars picked up wins at the No.3 and No. 4 spots behind strong play from
Shelby Hullett and
Vanessa Whyte. At the No. 3 slot, Hullet overcame a 7-5 opening-set loss to win a close second-set, 7-6, before emerging victorious in the third-set tiebreaker, 10-5.
Whyte’s opening set came down to a few clutch points and the London, England-native came up big in those points leading to a 7-6 opening set win. Once Whyte got past the first set, she went on to win the second-set by a more comfortable 6-3 margin.
Unfortunately, straight-set losses at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots handed the Raiders the 5-2 victory.
IUPUI is back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, when it heads to nearby Dayton, Ohio to take on the Dayton Flyers.
