GREEN BAY, Wis. – The IUPUI women’s tennis team picked up its second win of the season on Saturday defeating Wisconsin-Green Bay, 4-3.
IUPUI got off to an important 1-0 lead winning a tightly contested doubles point. With the Phoenix winning No. 1 doubles and the Jags winning No. 2 doubles by identical 8-4 scores, the doubles point came down to the third and final doubles match.
Vanessa Whyte and
Abbey Neff were in a back-and-forth match with Amanda Timm and Samantha Iwen and in the tiebreaker, Whyte and Neff got out to an early lead and never looked back winning the tiebreaker, 10-5, to secure the point for IUPUI.
Alisha Cummings came out strong at No. 1 singles winning 6-0 in the opening set. The second set was tougher for Cummings, but a break was the difference as she took the second set, 6-4, to clinch another point for IUPUI.
Despite losses at No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6 singles, IUPUI closed out the match thanks to wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles from
Shelby Hullett and Whyte.
The most impressive aspect of Hullett’s and Whyte’s wins were that they both overcame first-set losses to rally for three-set victories clinching the 4-3 win for IUPUI.
The Jaguars are back in action on Friday, Feb. 17, when they head to Dayton, Ohio, to take on both Wright State and Dayton.
