FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's soccer team suffered a disappointing end to the 2012 campaign on Saturday (Nov. 3) night as the Jaguars fell at Fort Wayne, 1-0. The loss, coupled with Western Illinois' earlier 2-1 win over Kansas City, dumped the Jaguars to No. 5 in the standings and on the outside looking in at the upcoming four-team Summit League Tournament in Macomb, Ill..
With both teams essentially needing a win to extend their seasons, Fort Wayne (4-14-1, 3-3-1 Summit) was far and away the more aggressive at the offensive end, outshooting IUPUI (6-10-2, 3-4) 14-5 overall and 4-0 on goal.
IUPUI had quality chances from both
Michael Sass and
Kyle Hyland early in the first half, both of which flew wide of target. By the end of the first half, IPFW began taking control, outshooting the Jags 5-0 over the final 20 minutes of the opening stanza.
The IUPUI defense continued to bend, but not break until the Mastodons finally potted the game-winner in the 85th minute. Mitch Falkenstern tallied his second goal of the season, after springing free via an assist from Austin West. Falkenstern, who had hit the post with a shot in the 79th minute, got his shot just past freshman goalkeeper
Eduardo Cortes and inside the far post.
With limited time to respond, IUPUI could only muster an
Adam Mills attempt that was stuffed and an
Alejandro Martignon attempt in the final minute that was off target.
No IUPUI player had more than one shot attempt while West led IPFW with four tries. Cortes made three saves in the loss as Fort Wayne goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier didn't need to make any saves in the shutout win. The 'Dons also finished with a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks, four of which came in the second half.
The loss kept IUPUI out of the four-team postseason tournament for the second straight season. The Jaguars will graduate nine seniors of this year's squad including Hyland, the team's top scorer, and three-year starter
Joshio Sandoval.
Defensively, IUPUI should return a solid core keyed by Cortes and rookie backs Sass,
Marek Moffett and
Clint Hoffar in the back third. Sass (3 goals, 4 assists) and
Ian Block (3 goals, 1 assist) should be the squad's top returning scorers next fall.
