FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's soccer team will head north with postseason implications on the line when the Jaguars take on Fort Wayne at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 3) at Hefner Soccer Complex. IUPUI (6-9-2, 3-3 Summit League) enters the weekend No. 3 in The Summit League standings while Fort Wayne (3-14-1, 2-3-1) is in the No. 6 spot.
The Jaguars can clinch a spot in the four-team Summit League Tournament with either a win or a tie, but can not climb higher than the No. 3 seed regardless of Saturday's outcome.
Head coach
Isang Jacob's team has played well of late, getting wins over Oral Roberts and Western Illinois before last weekend's double overtime loss at Kansas City. Junior
Ian Block forced overtime with a goal in the 87th minute before the host Kangaroos captured the victory with 1:30 left in the second overtime period.
Block scored his third of the season off an assist from
Adam Mills.
The late goal spoiled the IUPUI debut of redshirt freshman
Jess Clark, who made three saves in his first career start in net.
IUPUI has shown more offensive balance of late while senior
Kyle Hyland continues to lead the squad in goals (8), points (18), shots (57) and game-winners (3). Freshman defender
Michael Sass has three goals and a team-high four assists and both
Ryan Robinson and
Emile Garcia have two goals apiece.
In goal, freshman
Eduardo Cortes has a 1.36 goals against average and 95 saves in 15 starts. The Texas-native has five shutouts and is a four-time Summit League Defensive Player of the Week this year.
IPFW is led by freshman Corey Tom, who's netted four goals this season. Jackson Tooke has three assists and Jose Rodriguez has three goals and an assist. In goal, Brandon Cloutier has a 2.27 GAA and 92 stops in 18 starts.
IUPUI is 11-7-1 all-time against the Mastodons and 6-4 in the program's Division I era. The Jaguars have won three-in-a-row and five of the past six meetings between the two schools. Last year, the Jags claimed a 4-3 double overtime win over IPFW at Kuntz Stadium on Oct. 22, 2011.
