CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The IUPUI men's basketball team will continue play in the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off when the Jaguars compete in the Charlottesville Consolation Rounds at John Paul Jones Arena (14,593) at the University of Virginia. The Jaguars will take on North Texas (2-2) on Monday (Nov. 19) before playing Lamar (0-3) on Tuesday (Nov. 20). IUPUI (2-2) has never played either North Texas or Lamar on the hardwood.
Head coach
Todd Howard's team is coming off a hard fought 79-72 home loss to Bradley on Saturday, despite a career-high 26 points from senior guard
John Hart. Bradley got 18 points and 10 boards from Tyshon Pickett and 19 points from Walt Lemon, Jr. in the victory. A late 8-1 Bradley run turned a 65 all tie into a 73-66 lead with under a minute to play. Dyricus Simms-Edwards sparked the run with four straight points and came up with a key offensive rebound and assist with 1:37 left to push Bradley's lead to 71-66.
Hart and backcourt mate
Greg Rice combined to hit 7-of-11 three-point attempts, but the Jaguars finished the game shooting just 41 percent overall from the field. Bradley used a distinct size advantage to outrebound IUPUI 42-33 and outscore the Jaguars 48-20 in the paint. Junior big man Mitchell Patton scored 15 points and classmate
Donovan Gibbs turned in seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 1-2 all-time against the Braves.
IUPUI has alternated wins and losses through four games to start the year and is 1-0 on neutral courts after an 80-66 win over Bowling Green in Ann Arbor last week.
North Texas opened the year with back-to-back losses to No. 15/16 Creighton and Alabama-Huntsville before rebounding with wins over Lamar and Cameron. The Mean Green are led by Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year Tony Mitchell, who comes in averaging 14.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game. Sophomore guard Jordan Williams is netting 13 points per game and point guard Chris Jones is netting 11 points and six assists per game. As a team, North Texas is limiting opponents to just 38.6 percent shooting from the field and is forcing 16.8 turnovers per game.
Lamar is still seeking its first win of 2012-13 after losses at Kansas State, North Texas and Charlotte. Redshirt freshman forward Rhon Mitchell leads the squad in scoring (14.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg) and senior guard Donley Minor is the only other Cardinal averaging double-digits, coming in at 11.0 points per game.
This week's games will mark a homecoming, of sorts, for Associate Head Coach
Matt Crenshaw. The IUPUI Hall of Fame point guard played high school basketball at nearby Western Albemarle High School in Crozet, Va..
