INDIANAPOLIS – Competing for the first time in three weeks, the IUPUI men’s swimming and diving team had some of its athletes competing in different events than usual, but it didn’t set back the Jags as IUPUI defeated Valparaiso, 145-59, Friday evening at the IUPUI Natatorium.
“All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with a lot of our swims. We are in the midst of our toughest stretch of training thus far and you could not tell from a lot of our times,” head coach
Matt Bos said. “We were able to get some of our people in some different events tonight, and it was nice to see some different times.”
Aside from wins in the relays, four Jags combined for wins in seven events leading IUPUI to the victory.
It started out with
Rich Sunkel winning the 1,000 freestyle in 10:18.04, and later in the meet, Sunkel tacked on a win in the 100 freestyle timing in at 49.01.
Adam Ferguson also tallied a pair of wins in the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Ferguson timed in at 1:47.46 to win the 200 free, before posting the fifth-best time in school history in the 100 breast at 59.21.
Alex Rhoda was the final dual event winner on Friday evening winning both the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle in 1:58.16 and 4:58.41, respectively. Rhoda’s 200 IM mark was the eighth-best in program history.
The last individual event winner was
John Kamphuis, who won the 100 backstroke in 55.07.
The Jags continue a busy weekend of competition on Saturday, Nov. 10, when they welcome Evansville to the IU Natatorium. The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m.
