INDIANAPOLIS -
Greg Rice scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed eight boards and Purdue-transfer
John Hart added 16 points and five assists as the White team rolled past the Red squad, 79-65 in the second annual Red-White Scrimmage in front of a good crowd inside The Jungle on Tuesday (Oct. 23) night. Junior
Ian Chiles paced the Red team with 17 points and
Donovan Gibbs added 14.
"Overall, we were pretty pleased. I thought we showed an array of depth and it really let us see some matchups," IUPUI head coach
Todd Howard said. "Both teams finished strong and you really like to see that. I thought Greg (Rice) was the difference. He got the white team off to such a great start and that's what we asked him to do."
Behind Rice, the white team blazed out to a 16-6 lead at the end of the first 8-minute quarter. The second quarter was even more emphatic as Hart began shouldering more of the scoring load, pushing the advantage to 40-14 at the half.
The third quarter was more of an offensive show on both sides as the two squads combined to hit 9-of-16 threes and score 46 points in the 8-minute period. Gibbs showed some extended range entering his junior year, swished a pair of threes in the third frame. Trailing by 24 heading into the final quarter, the red team outscored the white 27-17 in the final eight minutes to close within 14 at the end. Sophomore
Jordan Shanklin added two triples and freshman
Elijah Ray showed an inside-outside game that'll make him a factor this season.
"Our depth and versatility was evident tonight," Howard said. "Every coach thinks they're deep all summer, but that depth starts shrinking once you get into practicing. Tonight, we played 14 guys and I thought all 14 of them can make an impact on games."
Junior Mitchell Patton scored 14 points and grabbed seven boards for the White squad while
Nick Kitcoff tallied nine points on 3-of-4 attempts from beyond the arc.
"We've known that Mitch was going to grow into his game," Howard said. "He's a versatile offensive weapon and that's a rare thing. We knew it wouldn't happen overnight, but we think he's finally there. He's had the chance to start games as a freshman and as a sophomore, but we think he's finally ready to be that guy in the middle."
For the second straight year, the basketball program drew a good contingent for the Red-White Scrimmage, something that Howard is looking forward to carrying over to the 2012-13 home season.
"I thought our fans were great," Howard said. "They're going to be a huge part of us having a big home season, but to have this many come out for a scrimmage is fantastic. I think we're going to play an exciting brand of basketball and keep them entertained this year."
IUPUI will open the exhibition slate on Tuesday, Oct. 30 when the Jaguars host Anderson University at 7:00 p.m. inside the Jungle. Live stats will be available via IUPUIJags.com shortly after tipoff.
