INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men’s swimming and diving team competed in front of its home fans for the first time this season Friday evening and the came away with a dual meet victory over Eastern Illinois, 112-88.

“I am very pleased with the way we came out and swam tonight. It was great to get the freshmen in and introduce them to what a college meet is like,” head coach
Matt Bos said. “I think they did a great job and we can take a lot away from this meet moving forward. Now we have a quick turnaround getting on the bus tomorrow morning and heading up to Purdue against some really tough competition.”
The meet opened with the men’s team earning a victory in the 200 medley relay.
From there, three newcomers combined for four victories on the evening, while a pair of veterans came through with three additional victories.
Daniel Saunders started things off with his first career victory in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:09.58, and
Rich Sunkel followed Saunders with his first career win in the 200 freestyle finishing his eight lengths at 1:47.76.
Tony Carroll got his first victory of the season in the 50 freestyle and led a 1-2-3 finish for the Jags in the event. Carroll posted a time of 21.83 to lead the way, while
Adam Ferguson and
Kendrick Vester timed in at 21.89 and 22.43, respectively.
Alex Rhoda backed up Carroll’s win with a victory in the 200 IM at 1:59.92, before Carroll emerged victorious again in the 100 freestyle at 47.78.
John Kamphuis was the fourth and final rookie to claim his first win doing so in the 200 backstroke with the only sub-two minute time of 1:57.75. Sunkel then earned the team’s final victory and his second of the night in the 500 freestyle clocking in at 4:50.46.
The Jags are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they head to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Indiana Intercollegiates hosted at Purdue University.
