FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State's Tristyn Walczak netted a goal with just 54 seconds left in regulation to give the host Bison a 1-0 win over IUPUI at Ellig Sports Complex on Sunday (Oct. 14).
After IUPUI failed to clear the ball out of danger, Katie Tallas gained possession and fired an initial strike at IUPUI junior goalie
Giselle Guzman. Guzman got a touch on the attempt, punching it off the crossbar, but Walczak was in the right place at the right time and easily finished the play for the game-winner.
"This game kind of epitomized our entire season, " IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. 'It's disappointing. We just can't put balls in the back of the net. Gigi played well and I thought our back four did a good job out there, but we still have to put a ball in the back of the net to win games and we didn't do it."
IUPUI (2-12-2, 0-3-2 Summit) had plenty of chances, despite being outshot 17-15 on Sunday. The Jaguars best chance of the first half came late in the stanza as freshman
Sierra Bryant got free in space on the right side. With NDSU goalkeeper Sierra Bonham well off her line, Bryant rolled a cross through the Bison box in the direction of both
Ashton Balch and
Paxton Ott. However, neither was able to get off a clean attempt before the Bison ultimately thwarted the rally.
"We had plenty of chances to score a goal that would've won the game," Johnson said. "In terms of moving the ball and creating chances, this was the best we've played all year. I credit (Bonham), she's a good keeper and did a good job for them."
In the second half, junior
Ashley Doreski had some quality chances and in the 83rd minute, senior
Kelli Parks had a free kick opportunity from 22 yards out sail over the crossbar.
"That's something we worked on all week, so it's a little frustrating when you don't capitalize," Johnson said. "It's the little things like that that make the difference between being successful and unsuccessful."
Doreski led the Jaguars with four shot attempts, putting three on frame in the loss. Bryant came off the bench with three shots while
Anna Rode had two attempts. Anisha Kinnarath led NDSU with five attempts.
"I thought
Sarah Carlisle did a good job on (Kinnarath)," Johnson said. "She's a good, strong player and I thought Carlisle did a good job on her. She did a good job in the back and I thought
Lauren Kulaga started slowly, but really came on and had a good game."
Guzman collected seven saves in the loss.
IUPUI will now return to Indianapolis for the 2012 home finale at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Sunday (Oct. 21) at 1:00 p.m. versus Omaha. Parks and
Leah Cage will be honored following Sunday's match as part of the annual senior day festivities. Live stats will be available on IUPUIJags.com right at kickoff.
