TULSA, Okla. - The IUPUI men's soccer team captured its first road win of the season, knocking off Summit League associate member Oral Roberts at Case Soccer Complex, 2-0 on Saturday (Oct. 13) night. The Jaguars scored twice in 11 seconds less than 10 minutes into the match with freshman
Michael Sass scoring the game-winner and assisting on
Emile Garcia's insurance goal.
The win snapped IUPUI's three-game winless streak and pulled the Jaguars back to .500 in Summit League play. IUPUI clawed to fourth in The Summit League standings while ORU dropped to seventh of eight teams.
"It was a good job overall by all the guys to get our first road win and my first Summit League road win as head coach," Isang Jacob said. "This win was critical to put us in the mix again to hopefully make it to the conference tournament."
The start to Saturday's match was already pushed back an hour after IUPUI had travel issues on Friday and was delayed in getting into Tulsa. Then, as game time approached, inclement weather moved the start back past 10:00 p.m. Eastern time. However, the wait was seemingly well worth it as Sass put the Jags on top with his third score of the season.
Classmate
Clint Hoffar orchestrated the game-winner, sending in a long centering pass from the left side to the 6-foot-7 Sass, who had come forward from his defensive position. Sass climbed the ladder and calmly shifted a header past ORU (2-10-0, 1-3 Summit) goalkeeper Ryan Grashik for his second career game-winner.
"Sass was unstoppable offensively and defensively," Jacob said.
Seconds later, Sass fed senior
Emile Garcia for his third career goal and his first tally since Halloween 2009. It was Sass' team-high fourth assist of the year and increased his point total to 10 in 2012. Playing with the lead, IUPUI (5-8-2, 2-2 Summit) nearly played add-on in the 40th minute, but a strike from
Ian Block glanced off the crossbar.
Sass just missed adding some late insurance as well, sending a header just high of the crossbar in the 68th minute.
Defensively, IUPUI limited ORU to just six shots on goal, all of which were gobbled up by freshman goalkeeper
Eduardo Cortes, who earned his fourth shutout of the season. Cortes, who was raised just less than five hours south in Dallas, Texas, had the opportunity to play in front of his mother for the first time as a collegian.
"Eduardo came up big to stop ORU," Jacob said. "I would say it was his best game ever for us."
Johnny Chavez led ORU with five shot attempts off the bench while Sass and senior
Kyle Hyland had two each for the Jaguars.
IUPUI will now return home to host Western Illinois on Senior Night at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7:00 p.m.. Admission is free and open to the public and live stats will be available on IUPUIJags.com shortly after kickoff.
