BROOKINGS, S.D. - The IUPUI women's soccer team broke a long scoreless drought and got a hard earned draw as the Jaguars played South Dakota State to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Fishback Soccer Park. Junior
Ashley Doreski put the Jaguars in front in the 16th minute with her team-high fourth goal of the season before the host Jackrabbits finally drew even in the 79th minute.
"They're a good team," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "I'd say they're in a bit of a state of panic. In all their years in the league, I don't know that they've ever had a team not be successful and this year, they host the conference tournament. (SDSU) just seemed to be a bit panicked tonight.
"Our kids battled and worked hard. They're a really physical team, but our back four did a really good job.
Lauren Kulaga played well and
Kelli Parks did some good stuff. I really thought
Taylor Heidorn did a good job in the midfield too."
SDSU (2-9-2, 0-3-1 Summit) outshot the Jaguars 22-3 overall and 12-2 on goal, but were stymied by IUPUI (2-11-2, 0-2-2 Summit) junior goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman, who made 11 stops in net. It was the California-native's third double-digit save effort of the season and upped her season total to 90 in 14 matches.
South Dakota State won the coin flip, but opted to give up the wind at the outset, helping IUPUI take the early lead. Having not scored in three straight games coming in, the early goal was a welcome sight for Johnson and the Jaguars.
Freshman
Kalli Shepler-Tucker sent the ball into the SDSU penalty box to Doreski, who was pushed off the ball as she tried to unload a shot. The left-footed Doreski was able to regain her footing and spun off the defender before rolling a shot past SDSU Elisa Stamatakis for the game's first goal.
Given the wind advantage in the second half, SDSU began unloading shots from all over the field at Guzman, who was repeatedly up to the task. The lone blemish came in the 79th minute when Christa Nyblom netted her third goal of the year off an assist from Diana Potterveld. Potterveld sent a cross between two IUPUI defenders, setting up Nyblom's shot from in close.
Otherwise, Guzman was brilliant, including make some game saving stops in the second half.
IUPUI got a shot on frame late in the match from junior
Sammi Deer, but Stamatakis answered with her only save of the match. However, twice in overtime IUPUI has possession close to SDSU's goal, only to be knocked down and later called for fouls for laying on the ball. Ultimately, SDSU's physical brand of soccer helped keep the Jacks' sheet clean over the final 90-plus minutes.
"There were a lot of studs up challenges tonight," Johnson said. "Kalli had a lot of balls up front that we just couldn't capitalize on. We've got to take advantage of our opportunities when we've got a chance to get the ball in positions to score goals."
IUPUI will cap the weekend at North Dakota State on Sunday (Oct. 14) in a 1:00 p.m. Eastern kickoff. The Jaguars come in at 4-4 all-time against NDSU, but 0-3 all-time in Fargo, N.D.
