ELMHURST, Ill. - IUPUI basketball standout Alex Young has been named The Summit League Male Athlete of the Month for the month of December. South Dakota women's basketball player Amber Hegge picked up the Female Athlete of the Month honor. For Young, it's his second career award as he was also honored in January 2011.

The 6-foot-6 swingman led IUPUI to a 5-3 record during the month including a five-game winning streak to close the calendar year. He poured in an IUPUI Division I record 43 points in the Dec. 10 over Western Kentucky, which marked the highest single-game in Division I hoops this season. In that contest, he also grabbed nine boards and added three steals.

On Dec. 1, Young had 28 points and later netted 27 points in an eight-point win over Valparaiso on Dec. 23 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. He was a two-time Summit League Player of the Week during the month and was pegged the CollegeInsider.com's Lou Henson Award Mid-Major Player of the Week on Dec. 26. For the month, the Indianapolis-native averaged 22.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. He hit 45 percent from the floor, 40 percent from three and 86 percent at the foul line.

He closed the month remaining the top active leading scorer with 1,930 career points. He has since climbed to No. 3 on IUPUI's all-time scoring list and is on the cusp of moving into the top 10 on The Summit League's all-time list.

This season, he leads the Jaguars in scoring (20.0 ppg), rebounding (6.6 rpg), blocked shots (20), threes made (32), free throws made (86) and is second on the squad in assists (37) and steals (19).
