EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The IUPUI women’s tennis team received singles wins from
Shelby Hullett and
Vanessa Whyte, but it wasn’t enough as it dropped a 5-2 decision to SIU-Edwardsville Friday afternoon at the local YMCA in Edwardsville, Ill.
The loss dropped IUPUI’s record to 0-2, while SIU-Edwardsville moved to 1-0 with its season-opening victory.
In doubles play, the Jaguars ended up on the wrong side on a pair of tight matches beginning with
Alisha Cummings and
Rachael Bridegroom falling, 8-7 (3), in No. 1 singles.
Abbey Neff and
Vanessa Whyte dropped an 8-3 decision at No. 2 singles, before
Jesika Bays and
Shelby Hullett came up a break shy in an 8-6 defeat in No. 3 singles.
At the top of the lineup in singles action, Cummings fought her way to a first-set tiebreaker, but a 7-1 loss in the tiebreaker followed by a 6-3 second-set loss put the Jags two points behind.
Hullett came up with a come-from-behind win in No. 2 singles to keep the match close. After falling 6-2 in the opening set, Hullett used a 6-2 second-set win to even things up, before breaking her opponent three times in the third and final set to win, 6-3.
IUPUI fell another point behind as
Abbey Neff fell by identical 6-3 scores in straight sets at the No. 3 position, but it got that point back behind a gritty win from Whyte at No. 4 singles.
Whyte was in a see-saw battle in the opening-set tiebreaker and a late rally pushed her to a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker. Once the tiebreaker fell her way, she cruised to a 6-1 second-set win closing the deficit to 3-2.
Unfortunately for the Jags, Bridegroom and Bays fell in straight sets at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively, securing the 5-2 win for the Cougars.
The Jaguars return to the court on Friday, Jan. 27, when it travels to Richmond, Ky., to take on Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. IUPUI first takes on the Eagles at 9 a.m., before taking on the Colonels at 2 p.m.
