BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The IUPUI men's soccer team's offensive troubles continued on Friday as the Jaguars dropped a 1-0 count to host Bowling Green at Cochrane Field. It marked the fourth straight time the Jags have been blanked and seventh time in 10 games this season.
BGSU (6-2-1) got all the offense it would need in the final minute of the first half when Colin Armstrong put away his third goal of the season.
"We had them on the ropes and just didn't score. In the last few minutes (of the first half), we got frustrated and stopped playing possession and it led to their goal," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "I told the guys, we have to stay the course. We have to be patient and we have to believe.
"It's frustrating for me and it's frustrating for them. But, the guys have to understand that it's not going to be done by an individual. It's going to be done by a collective effort from the team. One individual is not going to go out and get us a win; we don't have that kind of personnel. It's got to be done collectively."
Offensively, IUPUI (1-7-2) had chances but ultimately ran its scoreless streak to over 415 minutes dating back to the match at Cincinnati on Sept. 11.
Sophomore
Ian Block put a header on frame in the 33rd minute, set up by
Kyle Hyland's corner kick, but BGSU goalkeeper Michael Wiest was equal to the task. Late in the match, both
Tyler Thatcher and Hyland tested the BG goalie with shot attempts, as did #
Joshio Sandoval# in the 87th minute. Hyland led the squad with three shots, while Block and Sandoval attempted two each.Â
BGSU outshot IUPUI 19-10 overall, led by Zach Lemke and Danny Baraldi's five attempts.
Â
Wiest finished with four stops in his fourth shutout of the season. Senior
Tyler Keever, the reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, matched his season-high with six stops in the loss and lowered his goals against average to 1.37 in the process.
"Keever played well. Unbelievable with saves on three breakaways, he kept us in the game," Jacob said. "I just feel bad for our defense. It's like a piece of wood. If you keep pounding a piece of wood, eventually it's going to break. That's what happened to them."
Despite the outcome, there was certainly a silver lining for Jacob and the Jags.
"We can still win the (Summit League)," Jacob said. "We can still do the things we set out to do. We just have to believe in ourselves."
After an eight-game stretch away from home, the Jaguars will return to host Butler on Tuesday (Oct. 4) on "Pack the House" Night at Kuntz Stadium. The game, as part of Super Jaguars Week presented by Indiana Members Credit Union, will feature free giveaways including t-shirts, rally towels and hacky sacks. IUPUI is offering free admission to kids 13-and-under and to IUPUI students with a valid JagTag.
In addition, the match will be streamed live on IUPUIJags.com as part of the IUPUI LIVE! subscription service with coverage beginning at approximately 6:55 p.m.
