INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman
Taylor Heidorn had a goal and an assist, but Eastern Illinois tallied a pair of second half goals as IUPUI played the Panthers to a 2-2 double overtime tie at Kuntz Stadium on a steamy Friday night. IUPUI (1-3-1) took a 2-0 lead into halftime, but saw the guests retaliate with two scores in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
"I was proud of our girls to go out there for 110 minutes and continue to put forth a great effort in an overtime game," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "It's a little disappointing that we let an opportunity get away there to put a W on the board. In a conference situation, if we get up 2-0 on someone, we've got to put them away.Â
"I thought they were playing a very high restraining line in the first half and our kids did a good job of playing balls over top of them."
With EIU content to play a high back line, IUPUI dominated the opening half and finally got on the scoreboard in the 30th minute when Heidorn scored her second goal of the year. Sophomore
Sarah Carlisle played her forward and the rookie did the rest, flaring a shot over EIU (0-3-1) goalkeeper Brittany O'Dell from the top of the 18. Later, it was Heidorn who set the table for
Chelsi McHenry, who drove a brilliant strike past O'Dell and inside the left post for her first tally of the year in the 37th minute.
"We were finding the possession when we needed to find possession and we were hitting the long balls when we needed to hit the long balls," Heidorn said of the offense in the first half. "I like to take shots from outside. I've got a pretty big foot and I like to take advantage of it."
IUPUI outshot EIU 11-2 in the first half and 17-11 for the game.Â
The Panthers came off the mat early in the second half as Lauren Hoppensteadt poked a rebound past
Kristin Haseley after the IUPUI goalkeeper made an initial stop on Kristin Germann's attempt, but couldn't cover the loose ball. Just over eight minutes later, Germann scored when she got between a pair of IUPUI defenders before blazing a shot past Haseley from 25 yards out. Â
 Â
In the overtime periods, IUPUIÂ had the better of the scoring chances including a fantastic turn by
Megan Hock just inside the 18-yard box. However, her shot attempt went right at EIU's Jessica Taldone for one of her two second half saves. Later, Hock played an excellent cross through the EIU box, but just missed connecting with sophomore
Sarah Wong by less than a foot.
Hock led the Jaguars with five shot attempts and Heidorn fired four off the bench. Germann led EIU with three attempts. Haseley made four saves in 110 minutes work and O'Dell and Taldone combined to make six stops in net for the Panthers.
Friday's outcome was the first time IUPUI had ever gained any sort of result against Eastern Illinois. The Jaguars came into the match 0-4 all-time against the Panthers, including having been shutout the past three meetings.
IUPUI's final home match of the current four-game homestand will be on Friday, Sept. 9 when the Jaguars host Valparaiso on "Pack the House" Night. IUPUI is offering free admission that evening with tons of giveaways including soccer hacky sacks, t-shirts and posters. A live DJ will be playing throughout the evening and a free mini clinic will take place for youth teams in attendance during halftime.Â
