CLEVELAND, Ohio - The IUPUI women's soccer team allowed a pair of second half goals as they dropped a see-saw affair at Cleveland State on Sunday, 3-2. The Jaguars got behind 1-0 less than three minutes in, but took a 2-1 lead right before halftime.
However, the host Vikings had the last laugh, scoring in the 66th and 72nd minutes to claim the win.
"We let one get away again," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "It was definitely progress from Friday to today, but still not good enough."
After Sarah Zawie staked the Vikings to the early lead, senior
Megan Hock pulled the Jaguars even in the 26th minute with her team-high third goal of the season. Sophomore
Sarah Wong started the play with a nicely delivered cross that eluded the CSU goalkeeper. From there, freshman
Taylor Heidorn tapped the ball to Hock, who scored on the rebound in close. For Hock, it was her 29th career goal, leaving her two shy of tying Hall of Famer
Karrie Reising for the school record in that category.
"It was kind of an ugly goal, but it was scrappy and it's the kind of goal we needed," Johnson said. "We switched formations coming in and I thought we were able to create more opportunities, at least quality opportunities, to score."
Sophomore
Sarah Colby put IUPUI in front in the final minute before halftime when she scored from the right side. She worked past a pair of defenders before rolling a shot home from the top of the 18.
IUPUI continued to create chances in the second half, but was unable to capitalize.
"We didn't keep the momentum going," Johnson said.
CSU (6-3) pulled back to 2-2 when Nancy Newcomer scored off a Samantha Solomon assist, beating
Giselle Guzman to her left for her third goal of the year. Just over six minutes later, Natalie Dainels netted the game-winner.
The CSU attacker beat Guzman from just beyond the six-yard box after the IUPUI goalkeeper was caught off her back line. Guzman made four saves in relief of
Kristin Haseley, who was without a stop in the first half. CSU's Becky Williams made five stops in the win.
Daniels led all players with seven shots attempts as the Vikings outfired IUPUI (1-5-2) 14-11 overall. Hock, Heidorn, Colby and
Kristin Pierce all had two attempts for the Jaguars. The loss was IUPUI's 12th in its past 13 true road games.
"Now it's imperative we stick together and continue to work hard. We've got a real opportunity to string some wins together moving forward," Johnson said.
The Jaguars will cap their non-conference schedule next weekend when they play both Air Force and Campbell at the Crusader Classic in Valparaiso, Ind.. Friday's match is slated to start at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday's will kick at noon.
