LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The upset minded IUPUI men's soccer team came up on the short end of a 2-0 count as it took on the nation's No. 7 team, Louisville at Cardinal Park in downtown Louisville on Friday night. The Jaguars were locked a scoreless draw after 45 minutes, but yielded a pair of second half goals in the loss to last year's national runner-up.
"They're a very good team. They're solid in the back," Jacob said of Louisville. "I'm pleased with the performance, but not satisfied with the outcome. Everybody played well in the back. Collectively as a group, I thought this was one of the best performances I've seen as head coach here."
Despite limited offensive attempts on goal, IUPUI (1-3-1) was even with the Cards until the 55th minute when Michael Roman scored his second goal of the year off assists Kenney Walker and Ryan Smith. Roman got in behind the IUPUI defensive third and snuck a shot past senior goalkeeper
Tyler Keever for the eventual game-winning goal.
UofL (3-1) added insurance in the 83rd minute when Keever bobbled a restart and Austin Berry pounced on the rebound for the game's second goal. Keever made four saves in the defeat while Louisville starting goalkeeper Andre Boudreaux made just one stop in the shutout. However, it was a brilliant save, keeping a
Jeff Keyler attempt out of the back of the net.
"I thought Jeff Keyler had it," Jacob said of Keyler's second half try.
IUPUI was outshot 16-3 overall with senior forward
Matt Guy credited with the Jaguars' other two attempts. However, both
Ian Block and
Perez Agaba also created some chances with their speed up top.
Jacob is confident that the Jaguars' rigorous early season schedule will pay benefits long-term.
"We're still getting ourselves ready for the conference games. We've still got a ways to go, but we're working," he said.
Three of IUPUI's first five opponents were either nationally ranked or received votes this past week. The task gets no easier on Sunday when the Jaguars head to Cincinnati for game two of the Cincinnati/Louisville Tournament. IUPUI is 1-0 all-time, having beaten the Bearcats back in 2004.
Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
