INDIANAPOLIS - In a nip-and-tuck matchup that included 37 fouls and four cards, it was Wright State that came up with the only offense as the visiting Raiders knocked off the Jaguars 1-0 in front of a raucous 642 fans at Kuntz Stadium on Monday night. WSU's Justin Laird potted the game-winner in the 71st minute after Brian Cothern threaded a nice lead pass his direction.
Cothern worked up the left side before hitting Laird in stride running through the middle. From there, the WSU attacker got to the top of the 18 before blistering a ground ball shot past senior goalkeeper
Tyler Keever for the only score of the night.
Wright State (2-0) outshot the Jaguars 13-11, but both teams had quality chances throughout.
IUPUI (1-1) controlled the pace early, including racking up four corner kicks in the game's first seven minutes. Twice, the Jaguars got quality header attempts off the corners with
Yogi Snider missing wide right and
Ian Block pushing one over the crossbar.
"Our goal was to put pressure on their backs," Jacob said. "We knew they were going to give up some corners, which they did. We just didn't do a good job of executing those corners to get goals out of them."
Wright State's best chance of the first half was an Albert Nilsson 25-yard free kick that Keever plucked off the bounce while moving to his right, however the guests controlled the tempo for latter half of the first stanza.
The Raiders kept the Jaguars at bay offensively for much of the second half, mainly through physical play as neither side could generate any flow.
"We didn't play well. We played against a scrappy team and we had our chances earlier that we should've taken advantage of and we did not," Head Coach
Isang Jacob said. "That's what happens. It's good that it's happened early so we can learn from this and do something about it next time.
"We've got a lot of work to do."
Keever made four saves in goal while WSU's Craig Feehan made two stops in the shutout. Four different Jaguars had two shot attempts with Block and
Joshio Sandoval managing the only attempts on frame. Nilsson led all players with four shot attempts, most of which came on set pieces.
Despite the outcome, Jacob was happy with some things he saw on Monday.
"We got guys that actually fought and worked hard," Jacob said. "The young guys did learn today and were able to get minutes."
IUPUI's next eight matches will now be away from home, beginning with the University of Kentucky Tournament from Sept. 2-4. The Jaguars will take on Evansville on Friday, Sept. 2 at 5:00 p.m. before playing host Kentucky at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
