TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Freshman midfielder Taylor Heidorn found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career, but it wasn't enough as IUPUI fell short in a 2-1 loss at Indiana State on Sunday afternoon.

"It was better," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "Today was definitely a step in the right direction. It was good, but just not good enough. We've got to keep plugging away and continue to take care of things we can control and get better.

"Right now, we're just not consistently tough enough in the middle of the field to win games."

Indiana State (1-1) went in front in the 26th minute when Marisa Windisch headed a shot past by starting goalkeeper Giselle Guzman for her first score of the year. Allison Gasparovich set up the play by sending a restart into the middle of the IUPUI penalty box from where Windisch was able to finish. The play had an odd feel to it as a delayed whistle interrupted an IUPUI attack, ultimately leading to ISU taking possession going the other way.

Heidorn delivered the equalizer early in the second half when she drilled a shot from the right side past Indiana State goalkeeper Emily Lahay in the 55th minute. However, the Sycamores regained the lead almost immediately on Katrine Baker's game-winner in the 60th minute. The reserve midfielder blazed a shot from almost 30 yards out into the upper-right corner of the net, leaving sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Haseley without a play on the ball.

Both of Indiana State's goals came from reserves in the win.

Heidorn tested Lahay with a shot attempt in the 62nd minute and had another try go high in the 70th minute, but otherwise the Jaguars were held in check down the stretch. Heidorn led all players with five shot attempts while Megan Hock, Sarah Carlisle and Ashley Doreski each had two tries.

Hock also seemingly got in behind the ISU defense early in the first half for a breakaway try, but was called offsides on the play.

"Today we found a second forward to put up top with Megan Hock in Taylor Heidorn," Johnson said. "She played really well. She was able to get off some shots and hits the ball with power.

"We came out in the second half and really put it on them for awhile. Their keeper made a couple really good saves."

Overall, IUPUI (0-2) outshot the Sycamores 14-13 and had more corners (3-2) than the hosts. Guzman made three first half saves while Haseley was credited with four second half stops. It marked the second straight time the sophomores split action in goal.

Having started the year at 0-2 for the third straight season, the Jaguars will now embark on their longest homestand of the 2011 campaign. IUPUI's next four matches will be at Kuntz Stadium, beginning with the contest with Detroit on Friday, Aug. 26 at 7:00 p.m.. The Sunday, Aug. 28 match with Eastern Michigan will be broadcast live via the web as part of the IUPUI LIVE! subscription service with pregame coverage beginning approximately five minutes before kickoff.

"We've got a tough schedule in front of us," Johnson said. "It's not like two years ago with the teams we're playing now. We've upped things since then."
