INDIANAPOLIS - Former IUPUI swingman
Leroy Nobles recently signed a contract with Asseco Prokom in Poland to begin his professional basketball career. Prokom won the PKL title a year ago with a seven-game series win over PGE Turow.
Nobles is expected to depart on Aug. 21 with Prokom's first game scheduled for late October. He inked along with veteran guard Jerel Blassingame, who last played for Energa Czarni Slupsk in Poland last season. The duo represents a revamped backcourt heading into the upcoming season.
"I'm just excited to get going," Nobles said. "I'm ready for the opportunity and I'm ready to make my mark over there. As a rookie, I'm going to go over there, work hard, compete and try to get better. I've been working hard and I'm going to continue to work hard because this is what I want to do. It's going to be a great opportunity for me personally and I'm thrilled I get the chance to continue to play."
Nobles earned First Team All-Summit League honors following his senior year and made almost 40 percent from three in his four-year IUPUI career. The Louisville-native drilled 186 career treys, tying for fifth in program history. He also accumulated 1,464 career points, ranking seventh on the school's all-time list. All total, he appeared in 126 career games and started 90 times.
This past spring he earned a pre-draft workout with the NBA's Washington Wizards but ultimately went undrafted. Nobles also earned his degree this past May.
The 6-foot-5 sharpshooter becomes the most recent in a long line of former IUPUI players to earn a professional contract, joining others such as George Hill, Robert Glenn, Odell Bradley, Matt Crenshaw, Don Carlisle, Carlos Knox, Derek Williams and Akeem Clark. In all, 22 former IUPUI student-athletes have gone on to professional playing careers since 1996.
Prokom has boasted a number of former NBA players on their roster including Drew Barry, Travis Best, J.R. Giddens and DaJuan Wagner.
