SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The IUPUI women’s tennis team concluded its regular season on a high note with a Saturday sweep over South Dakota State and Western Illinois to improve its overall record to 6-19 and even its Summit League mark at 4-4.
The Jags opened the day against the host of this weekend’s cluster, South Dakota State, and IUPUI found itself behind early with the Jackrabbits sweeping the doubles action to take a 1-0 lead.
SDSU’s lead grew to 2-0 when Jenny Blackburne topped
Danielle Haefele in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2, but that’s when IUPUI’s depth took over.
Shelby Hullett responded with a 6-2, 6-1 win in No. 2 singles, giving IUPUI its first point of the day, before
Vanessa Whyte followed suit with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph in No. 3 singles to knot the score at two.
Jesika Bays gave the Jags their first lead of the day winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, shifting the attention to the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches.
With
Alisha Cummings and Megan McDougal one game into the third set,
Lee Matthews finished off a come-from victory (3-6, 6-3, 6-2) to close out the win.
With the win, Cummings’ match went unfinished and IUPUI won the match, 4-2.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Needing a win to create a three-way tie for fourth place in the Summit League standings, IUPUI cruised to a 4-0 win behind a win in doubles action and three singles victories.
Hullett and
Jesika Bays wasted no time with an 8-0 win in No. 3 doubles to give the Jags the early advantage. A tight 9-7 victory followed from the doubles tandem of Whyte and Matthews, securing the doubles point for IUPUI.
In singles play, the even-numbered matches went off first and that was all IUPUI would need to clinch the victory.
At No. 2 singles, Hullett dominated in a 6-0, 6-2 win, while her doubles teammate Bays, also cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
Cummings found herself in a tighter match than Hullett and Bays, but she also won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to win the match, 4-0.
The win marked IUPUI’s third in a row and moved its record to 6-19 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
