INDIANAPOLIS – Following a tough loss at Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday, the IUPUI women’s tennis team got back in the win column Wednesday afternoon defeating Marian University, 7-0, at Five Seasons Sports Club in Carmel, Ind.
The win upped the Jags record to 3-17 on the season.
IUPUI got off to a great start in doubles action behind
Alisha Cummings and
Danielle Haefele. The duo jumped out to an early lead and was able to comfortably win their No. 1 doubles tilt, 8-3.
Behind them,
Vanessa Whyte and
Lee Matthews made quick work of their opponent in No. 2 doubles winning by an 8-2 margin, clinching the doubles point for IUPUI.
Despite already having the doubles point in hand,
Shelby Hullett and
Jesika Bays managed to cruise to a 8-2 win in their doubles match giving the Jags the clean sweep in doubles play.
IUPUI’s stiffest challenge in singles came at the top of the order. Haefele, who was slotted at the No. 1 spot, got off to a bit of a slow start dropping her opening set 6-3, but she quickly rebounded with a 6-2 second-set win to send the match to a deciding tiebreaker. The momentum Haefele built up in the second set remained on her side and she cruised to a 10-2 tiebreaker win to secure the victory.
Hullett picked up IUPUI’s third point on the day winning her No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 6-2, while Whyte followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.
Not only did Whyte’s win clinch the victory, but it marked her sixth consecutive win in singles play.
Cummings used a 6-2, 6-3 win in No. 4 singles, Matthews picked up a 6-0, 7-5 win in No. 5 singles, and Bays tallied a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 6 slot to close out the day for IUPUI.
The Jaguars will have a few days off before traveling to Milwaukee, Wis., to take on Marquette on Saturday, April 2. Saturday’s match was originally set to take place in early February but had to be postponed due to a blizzard in the Milwaukee area.
