Round #1 Results
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Junior
Michael Davan turned in a 1-under 71 as the Jaguars sit in 11th place among the 24-team field at the C&G Bank Intercollegiate at the Woods Course at the Kingsmill Resort. Collectively, IUPUI fired an opening round 297 and are 16 shots back of leader James Madison heading into Tuesday's final round.
"This early in the spring, I think it's a good challenge that we're down by 16," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "I knew after our round our score was about 10 shots too high for that golf course. I just saw too many mistakes today.
"I'm excited for tomorrow though. I'm excited to see if we lay over or if we come out and charge up through the field. I want to see how they respond."
Davan was brilliant on Monday, carding his best round of the spring by three shots and is locked in an 11-way tie for seventh place.
"On the first nine, I didn't hit it as good as I did on the back nine," the Bismarck, Ill.-native said. "I hit a lot of good putts on the back nine - they just all didn't go in."
Classmate
Ben Engle enjoyed a 73 (+1) on Monday and rookie
Juan Diego Plasencia came in at 76 (+4). Junior
Michael Powell rounded out the scoring at 77 (+5) and senior captain
Ben Moster was one shot back at 78 (+6). The Jaguars were the first team out on Monday and began their round in the wind and rain. By the end of the round, conditions were nearly perfect.
"No excuses," Andrews said. "In golf, it can work both ways. It can be better in the morning and worse in the afternoon or vice versa. You just never know."
Davan thinks he and his teammates can make a move on Tuesday.
"All of us need to be a little more patient out there," Davan said. "I need to capitalize on the opportunities I have out there."
JMU was -7 as a team at 281 while UNC-Greensboro is six shots back at 287. USC Upstate (291) is third and host William & Mary (293) and Binghamton (293) are tied for fourth.
JMU's Chris Wellde posted a 67 and holds a one-shot lead over Delaware's Justin Martinson, who's alone in second-place.
The tournament is expected to conclude tomorrow afternoon following the final round of play.
