INDIANAPOLIS – Hosting the first of four matches this weekend, the IUPUI women's tennis team got a win in singles play from
Jesika Bays, but the Jaguars ultimately dropped its match to Wright State, 6-1, Friday evening at the Five Seasons Sport Club.
The Jags fell behind early dropping all three doubles matches as the Raiders jumped out to the early 1-0 lead.
Lee Matthews and
Alisha Cummings paired up at the No. 1 doubles spot for IUPUI but struggled in an 8-2 defeat.
Vanessa Whyte and
Danielle Haefele attempted to even the doubles matches at one apiece in a tighter No. 2 doubles match, but Wright State's duo of Kayla Tuscany and Taylor Hines used a costly break to down Whyte and Haefele, 8-6.
In the third doubles match,
Shelby Hullett and Bays came up on the short end of an 8-4 result.
Bays gave the Jaguars a lift at the bottom of the lineup overcoming a 6-0 first-set loss to win the second set, 6-4. In the tiebreaker, Bays' impressive play continued leading to a 10-5 tiebreaker victory, securing the lone point for IUPUI.
Whyte jumped out to a one set to none lead in her No. 3 singles match winning the first set, 7-6, in a tiebreaker. However, in a reversal from Bays' match, Kenisha Webb cruised to a 6-2 second set win forcing a tiebreaker, before winning the race to 10 points, 10-5.
Unfortunately for the Jaguars, Hullett dropped her No. 1 singles match by identical 6-3 scores, in addition to losses by Haefele, Cummings, and Matthews at the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 spots, respectively, securing the Raiders win.
The loss dropped the Jaguars to 1-10 on the season, but the Jags will have two opportunities to get back on track on Saturday, March 12. IUPUI hosts both Houston and Western Michigan on Saturday, with the Jags taking on the Cougars at 3 p.m., before closing the evening with a 7 p.m. start against the Broncos.
