BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The IUPUI women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Illinois State inside the Evergreen Racquet Club on Friday night. IUPUI's lone highlight of the evening came via a win by the No. 3 doubles tandem of
Shelby Hullett and
Jesika Bays. The match was the Jaguars' first road match of the year after starting with five straight at home.
ISU's Aniko Kiss and Phyllis Tigges defeated IUPUI's
Alisha Cummings and
Lee Matthews at No. 1 doubles, 8-2 to take the early advantage in the match. However, Bays and Hullett made things interesting with their 8-5 win at No. 3, teaming together for the first time this spring. ISU later claimed the point with an 8-4 win at No. 2.
In singles, ISU's depth was superior, beginning with Ariane Maack's win over Cummings at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1. The Redbirds won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles by the same 6-0, 6-1 scores before claiming the match via a 6-2, 6-1 win over
Vanessa Whyte at No. 2 singles. Freshman
Danielle Haefele lost a tough 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 4 singles, leaving the No. 1's as the last to finish.
ISU's (1-3) Aniko Kiss rallied to beat Hullett in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 to claim the sweep. Illinois State improved to 8-0 all-time against the Jaguars (0-6) with Friday's win.
IUPUI will cap its two-game trip on Saturday when it plays at Bradley at 1:00 p.m.. The Jaguars lost to the Braves 5-2 at the Indianapolis Tennis Center last season as Hullett and Bays collected singles wins.
