INDIANAPOLIS – In a busy second day of the 2011 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships, the IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams combined to break four school records as both teams finished Day 2 in sixth place.

IUPUI had seven athletes advance from the preliminaries to the finals on Thursday, with three of those athletes setting new school records.

Katelyn Cato got the meet off to a stellar start for the Jaguars as her 500 freestyle time of 5:10.66 secured the final spot in the ‘A’ final on Thursday evening while also breaking Alexandra McCreight’s school-record of 5:12.90.

In her final, Cato narrowly missed out on surpassing her school-record time set earlier in the day but clocked in at 5:11.56, scoring 11 points with an eighth-place finish.

In the men’s 500 freestyle, Tyler McGowan broke John Winter’s school record and cemented a spot in the ‘A’ final by clocking in at 4:40.47 in the preliminaries. McGowan’s time bested Winter’s previous school record by exactly five seconds.

Similar to Cato, McGowan finished in the exact same place as his seed in the final, fifth, and narrowly missed out on surpassing his new school record at 4:40.96. Hunter Chiasson and Steven Bretscher also advanced to the ‘B’ final and a 14th and 15th place finish, respectively, gave IUPUI a combined 19 points for the event.

The other individual school-record mark came in the women’s 50 freestyle as Elizabeth Bourgeois notched the first sub 24-second time of the year finishing third in the preliminaries with a time of 23.91, breaking Lindsay Corn’s mark of 23.96 set on Feb. 19, 2004.

Also in the women’s 50 freestyle, Lindsey Hurst touched the wall in a personal-best time of 24.50, moving her into 14th place in the IUPUI record books and placing her in the ‘B’ final.

In the finals of the 50 freestyle, Bourgeois did not disappoint and her time of 24.04 in the final tied for fourth, tacking on 14.5 points for the Jaguars. The 50 freestyle proved to be IUPUI’s best event as Hurst tacked on four points with a 13th-place time of 24.47 in the ‘B’ final, besting her prelims time by .03 seconds.

Michael Steurer also put together an impressive showing in the 200 individual medley timing in at 1:57.64 to advance to the ‘B’ final and in the final, his 14th-placce time of 1:58.30 continued to add points to IUPUI’s score. Steurer’s preliminaries time was a PR and moved him into third place in the school record books.

Finally, Kelly Loftus shaved 2.26 seconds off her seed time in the 200 IM moving her into the ‘B’ final with a mark of 2:14.81. In the ‘B’ final, Loftus swam a time of 2:19.32, but still added a point to the team’s score.

The top individual finish of the day came from Chen Ni, who placed second in the 1-meter dive with a six-dive score of 274.10.

In the final women’s event of the day, Bourgeois, Hurst, Tori Taylor, and Cato combined to produce a time of 1:36.81 setting IUPUI’s fourth school record of the day. The time broke the previous school-record of 1:38.58 set on Feb. 19, 2004.

Through 13 events, the IUPUI men’s squad sits in sixth place with 103.5 points, while the women’s team is in sixth place with 96 points. Oakland is sitting in first place in both the men’s and women’s meets with 291 points and 382 points, respectively.
