INDIANAPOLIS – The 2011 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships got underway Wednesday night beginning with the men’s and women’s 800 freestyle relays, and the IUPUI men’s squad set the school record in the event to highlight the night for the Jags.
In the men’s 800 freestyle,
Michael Steurer got the group off to a good start timing in at 1:45.55 in his 200 meters, moving him into sixth in the IUPUI record books in the 200 freestyle. After Steurer,
Luke Green,
Steven Bretscher, and
Tyler McGowan combined to give the quartet a sixth-place time of 7:05.18.
The time put forth by the group set a new school record breaking the previous mark by more than two seconds set by Taylor Williamson, Alec Sheehy, Preston Ray, and Brian Wheeler back on Feb. 18, 2005.
Unfortunately on the women’s side, a disqualification occurred during their event resulting in zero points.
Through one event, Oakland holds the lead on the men’s and women’s sides with 40 points apiece.
Thursday’s preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in the IU Natatorium, while Thursday’s finals will begin at 6:30 p.m.
