INDIANAPOLIS – Playing in its first match in two weeks, the IUPUI women’s tennis team took on local rival Butler, but the Bulldogs defeated the Jaguars, 7-0, Saturday evening at Five Seasons Sports Club.
The match got off to a rough start as both of IUPUI’s top two doubles tandems fell by identical 8-2 scores, giving Butler the doubles point.
After Butler closed out the doubles session with an 8-1 win in No. 3 doubles,
Shelby Hullett tried to get the Jaguars back on track but she dropped her No. 1 singles match, 6-4, 6-2.
However, in No. 5 singles action,
Lee Matthews jumped in front with the early 6-4 first-set win, but struggled in the second set falling 6-1, sending the match to a decisive third set. In the third set, Matthews and her opponent were neck and neck, but she ultimately came up short in the tiebreaker, 7-6 (5).
Finally, in No. 6 singles play,
Jesika Bays dropped a 6-1, 6-1, decision to close out the match.
IUPUI will be on the road next weekend when it travels to the state of Illinois to take on Illinois State and Bradley. The Jags will first take on Illinois State on Friday, Feb. 18, before moving on to meet Bradley on Saturday, Feb. 19.
