ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IUPUI men's soccer team yielded a pair of goals in less than a six minute stretch early in the second half as the Jaguars dropped a 2-0 count at Oakland on Saturday (Nov. 5) night. With the loss, IUPUI finished the regular season at 6-10-2 overall and 2-3-1 in Summit League play, missing out on a spot in the upcoming four-team league tournament.
"I'm very disappointed we didn't make the conference tournament," Head Coach
Isang Jacob said. "I can guarantee you we're working very hard to change that. The 2012 season starts today for me and for the returning class.
"Tonight, the guys played well but our good wasn't good enough. We had to throw numbers forward to try and at least get a tie and it didn't work out for us."
After a scoreless first half, Oakland (6-11-1, 3-3 Summit) went in front in the 58th minute on John Timm's second goal of the season. The Golden Grizzlies set up a combination play on a restart, resulting in Timm hitting a shot past senior goalkeeper
Tyler Keever from in close.
In the 64th minute, it was Miche'le Lipari's well struck drive that bent past Keever for his second goal of the year that capped the game's scoring.
IUPUI nearly took the lead early in the match on a
Galen Cassady header, but the ball was played off the endline by an OU defender. Oakland also had some quality chances in the first half including a Timm shot that was cleared by an IUPUI defender and a rebound opportunity by Jake Przybycien in the closing seconds that was defended by an IUPUI back.
However, fouls plagued the Jaguars in the second half , later resulting in Oakland's eventual game-winner. Overall, the Jags were whistled for 17 fouls compared to OU's five, 11 of which came after halftime.
Oakland outshot IUPUI 21-12 led by Przybycien's seven tries. Cassady led IUPUI with three attempts from his defensive spot and the senior trio of
Perez Agaba,
Yogi Snider and
Matt Guy all fired two attempts in their final collegiate game.
Keever made five stops in his final career match.
The Jaguars needed a win coming in after Oral Roberts had upset No. 1 Western Illinois earlier in the day and IPFW beat Eastern Illinois 2-1. The loss marked the fourth straight year the Jags' season had come to an end at Oakland.
"We missed our opportunity when we lost to Oral Roberts at home," Jacob said. "We had to take care of our home field. With three wins and a tie, we get in (the conference tourney). That was our missed opportunity.
"Now I'm going to have a chance to play for next season. Now I know what I've got and we're going to use the spring training really well to develop the players. That's what spring is for."
