IUPUI to play Florida Atlantic, Kansas, and Lamar in Lawrence, Kan., Nov. 25-27

The IUPUI women’s basketball team will spend the Thanksgiving Holiday in Lawrence, Kan., participating in the 2011 Basketball Traveler’s Inc. Tipoff Classic. The Jags will take on Florida Atlantic, Kansas, and Lamar in the three-day tournament.
 
SCOUTING THE FIELD
  • The Jags open the tournament against Florida Atlantic at 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 25, and the Owls are 3-1 on the season coming off back-to-back wins over Webber International and Bethune-Cookman.
  • FAU has two players scoring in double figures led by Latavia Dempsey’s 13.3 ppg. Dempsey is the Owl’s sixth man.
  • Florida Atlantic is averaging 68.0 ppg and owns a rebounding margin of +11.5 rpg.
  • The host Kansas Jayhawks are 3-0 on the young season which included victories over Western Michigan, Creighton, and Wake Forest.
  • The Jayhawks have a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring in double figures led by Carolyn Davis’ 17.5 ppg.
  • KU is averaging 74.3 ppg and is shooting 49.4 percent from the floor as a team.
  • Lastly, Lamar owns a 4-1 record, which includes a nine-point victory over Ole Miss. Its only loss is at defending National Champion Texas A&M, 83-58.
  • Kalis Loyd is the top scorer in the field averaging 19.8 ppg in five contests and is a match-up problem as a 6-2 guard.
  • The Lady Cardinals average 10.6 spg as a team.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST THE FIELD
  • Friday’s match-up against the Owls will be the first meeting between the schools, while the Jags are 1-1 all-time against Lamar and 0-1 against Kansas.
  • IUPUI’s only meeting against KU came on Dec. 28, 2002, with the Jags falling 83-61 in Lawrence.
  • The Jaguars and Cardinals played a home-and-home series during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 season with each team winning on their home floor.
  • IUPUI defeated Lamar, 65-57, on Dec. 13, 2006, before Lamar returned the favor winning on 61-54, on Nov. 27, 2007, four years to the date of Sunday’s meeting.

  • In IUPUI’s win over St. Francis (NY) on Saturday, Nov. 19, Katie Comello and Kerah Nelson scored 25 points and 23 points, respectively, leading the Jaguars to a 75-56 win over the Terriers.
  • In scoring 25 points, Comello hit a career-high six three’s helping her bounce back from a 0-of-10 shooting performance against Purdue in the season opener.
  • Nelson connected on 10-of-15 shot attempts, including 2-of-2 from long range, en route to her 23 points, marking her 12th 20-plus point effort of her career.
  • With Comello and Nelson both surpassing 20 points, it marked the first time since Feb. 16, 2008, that the Jags had multiple players score over 20 points in a game.
  • That night, Julia Whitted and Jernisha Cann scored 26 points and 21 points, respectively, in a 69-66 win over Oral Roberts.
  • Outside of their scoring, Comello dished out a career-high five assists, and Nelson grabbed a season-best eight boards.
 
DEE DEE DEFENSE
  • During her freshman campaign, Del’Niqua Bellamy, who goes by Dee Dee, was known for her tenacious on-the-ball defense.
  • While her defensive intensity remains the same, Bellamy did a little bit of everything in IUPUI’s win over St. Francis (NY) on Nov. 19.
  • Bellamy scored five points, had a career-high nine rebounds, a career-high tying four steals, and three assists in the win.
  • Against Indiana State on Nov. 22, Bellamy continued to fill the stat sheet with four points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
  • On the season, Bellamy is averaging 3.7 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 2.0 apg, and 3.0 spg.
  • As a 5-6 guard, Bellamy’s rebounding and steals averages are tops on the team.
 
ROAD/NEUTRAL WOES
  • When the Jaguars head to Lawrence, Kan., to take on Florida Atlantic, Lamar, and Kansas, IUPUI will be looking to erase its losing skid away from The Jungle.
  • The Jags are 0-2 on the road this season, losing at then- No. 21 Purdue on Nov. 13 and Indiana State on Nov. 22.
  • IUPUI’s last win away from home came on Feb. 28, 2009, when the Jaguars closed out the 2008-09 regular season with a win over Western Illinois.
  • After going winless away from home during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons and losing both of its games away from home this season, the Jaguars will look to end their 34-game road/neutral losing streak.
