INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team's winless slide continued with a 1-0 Summit League loss to South Dakota State at Kuntz Stadium on Sunday (Oct. 9). The Jaguars yielded a corner kick goal to SDSU's Christa Nyblom in the 19th minute to account for the game's only offense.

"I thought we gave us a soft goal that we shouldn't have given up. Otherwise I thought we played really well. The goal on the corner kick where the ball goes straight in the goal and other than that, I don't think we gave us another dangerous opportunity the entire rest of the game," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "You can't do that and not come away with a win. We've got to do a better job of finishing things off."

Offensively, the Jaguars created some early chances including a Megan Hock strike that went high in the fourth minute and a Sarah Colby attempt that was easily stopped by SDSU goalkeeper Kat Donovan in the 12th minute. Freshman Taylor Heidorn also had a powerful drive in the 30th minute that Donovan plucked.

However, IUPUI (1-9-4, 0-3-1 Summit) was largely out of sync offensively on Sunday, thanks partly to SDSU's physical play. The Jaguars were flagged for a season-high seven offsides calls, many of which thwarted scoring chances. Things went from bad to worse in the final minute of the first half when Johnson was given a straight red card while standing on the field checking on an injured player.

"A little bit of panic sets in when you go down a goal and you're thinking I've got to get a jump on this kid to get this thing going," Johnson said.

SDSU (8-5-1, 4-0) struggled to find scoring opportunities against the Jags back line, but scored on Nyblom's corner less than 20 minutes in. The Jackrabbit midfielder hit her corner towards the near post, where it eluded a cast of IUPUI defenders and deflected into the side net for Nyblom's third score of the year.

The Jaguars kept plugging away, creating its best chance of the game in the 75th minute. Hock got in behind the SDSU defense and played a left-footed cross to Colby on the back post, but the shot attempt went high of the crossbar.

SDSU's best scoring chances of the second half came on back-to-back attempts by Kayla Braffet in the 58th and 60th minutes, both of which Giselle Guzman stopped. Braffet finished with a game-high three shot attempts, all of which were on target, but led to three of Guzman's five stops. Chelsi McHenry and Colby led the Jaguars with two shots each as IUPUI outshot the Jackrabbits 9-8.

SDSU extended its winning streak to four, all of which have come via shutout. On the flip side, IUPUI remains at just one win, having not been victorious since the the Aug. 28 match with Eastern Michigan. IUPUI was blanked in back-to-back games for the first time since the end of the 2010 campaign when they were shutout in three straight.

IUPUI wore pink jerseys on Sunday as part of its annual 'Kick for the Cure' in the ongoing fight against breast cancer. The jerseys were auctioned off throughout the game with the money benefiting the American Cancer Society. The jerseys of Guzman, Lauren Gallets and Romy Schwaiger are still up for bid by visiting this website. Bidding closes at noon Eastern on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

IUPUI will next hit the road for three straight road games, including a two-game trip next week. The trip will start at Oral Roberts on Thursday (Oct. 13), followed by Saturday's match at Southern Utah (Oct. 15).
