INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team continued its torrid defensive play and got a late, scrappy goal from senior Galen Cassady as the Jaguars notched a 1-0 win over UMKC at Kuntz Stadium on Saturday. Defensively, the Jaguars extended their scoreless streak to 225 and have yielded just two goals over the past five games.

"Great win. It was a great win," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "And I told the guys it speaks well about them when we played poorly and were still about to get a win out of it. It speaks about how disciplined we worked in the second half and we took care of what we needed to take care of."

The win was IUPUI's first over UMKC since 2007.

"We had a rough streak back on the road in September, but just to get back against Butler and have a 3-0 shutout and here a conference, a shutout, is really nice," Cassady said.

Cassady tallied the game-winner in the 83rd minute after UMKC Kyle Martin was unable to corral a Kyle Hyland corner kick inside his six-yard box. The ball popped free and trickled towards the far post where the group of Cassady, Matt Guy, Tyler Drumm and Yogi Snider all tried to get the final touch. The senior back finally pushed the ball over the endline for his first goal of the season and second in his IUPUI career. Amazingly, both have been game-winners against Summit League opponents.

"It's always fun (to score)," Cassady said. "As defenders, we take pride in hitting people and keeping them from scoring. Every once in a while, we get bored and we want to go up there some."

IUPUI (3-7-2, 1-0-1 Summit) kept the Kangaroos off the board, despite dodging some bullets in both halves. In the 33rd minute, senior goalkeeper Tyler Keever mishit a back pass from a teammate, leading to UMKC's Franklin Washington and Keever chasing the loose ball. The UMKC attacker was able to get a slight touch, but Tyler Thatcher cleared the ball off the line for a team save.

Early in the second half, David Sarabia tested Keever with a quality header, but the IUPUI keeper pushed the ball high of the crossbar for one of his five stops. Sarabia finished with a game-high five shot attempts, putting three on frame.

The Jags also had chances to score include a couple good looks from Guy and a strike from Ian Block that glanced off the crossbar in the 64th minute. Sophomore Jeff Keyler also had a pair of attempts in the 33rd minute, one of which was knocked down and the second of which was stopped by Martin. Martin finished with two saves as both teams attempted 13 total shots.

Guy and Keyler led the Jaguars with four shots each.

The shutout was Keever's fourth of the season and 10th of his collegiate career. For the season, he dropped his goals against average to 1.15 and has allowed just one goal at home in four games.

The Jaguars will cap the three-game homestand on Wednesday night when they host Western Michigan at Kuntz at 7:00 p.m.. The game can be seen as part of the IUPUI LIVE! subscription service on IUPUIJags.com as Greg Rakestraw calls the action.
