INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team's postseason hopes suffered another setback on Friday night as the Jaguars dropped a 2-0 count to North Dakota State at Kuntz Stadium. The loss was extended the Jaguars' winless streak to nine-in-a-row and dropped IUPUI to 1-8-4 overall this season. IUPUI is 0-2-1 in The Summit League to start the year.
North Dakota State (10-2-1, 3-0 Summit) jumped in front in the game's fifth minute when Morgan DeMike tallied her fourth goal of the season. The play began with a free kick about 30 yards from the IUPUI goal that slammed off the middle of the Jags' three person wall. Abbey Moenkedick chipped the rebound over the IUPUI defensive backs to DeMike, who headed a shot past
Giselle Guzman for the eventual game-winner.
"We just didn't defend a few set pieces like we needed to," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "Whether it be us defending plays inside our 18 o us attacking plays inside their 18, it's just not translating into wins for us."
Defensively, NDSU kept the Jaguars relatively at bay in the first half, allowing just two first half attempts. Senior
Megan Hock just missed getting on the receiving end of a
Kristin Pierce through ball in the 24th minute and Pierce fired wide right in the 30th minute.
IUPUI came out firing to start the second half though as
Sarah Colby earned the Jaguars a corner kick with a quality strike in the 46th minute and
Sarah Carlisle just missed a header wide left off that restart.
After the Bison weathered the initial storm, the guests added insurance in the form of a Brooklyn Dyce score in the 58th minute. Moenkedick lofted a long, high restart deep into the IUPUI box where Dyce got the ball to her feet, turned on her defender and snuck an unimpeded shot just inside the left post for her third score of the season.
In desperation mode,
Chelsi McHenry just missed scoring twice in the closing minutes. On her first attempt, she blasted a shot from the top of the 18 that Kalani Bertsch tipped over the crossbar. In the final minute, McHenry had a shot dialed in for the upper right corner of the net, but Bertsch emerged through traffic to punch the ball wide.
It was just the third time this season IUPUI had been shutout and the first time it had happened at home since last year's season finale. Pierce and Colby led IUPUI with three shots each while both Pierce and McHenry finished with two on frame. Guzman made five saves in the loss and Bertsch made five for the Bison.
"We had scored goals in the last six or seven matches in a row, so I felt comfortable that we'd come out and get a goal in the second half," Johnson said. "We came out really firing away and getting good chances but couldn't quite get the ball to go in the back of the net."
IUPUI will cap its two-game homestand on Sunday when it hosts South Dakota State at Kuntz at 1:00 p.m.. The match marks the Jaguars' annual 'Kick for the Cure' in the ongoing fight against breast cancer as IUPUI will wear pink jerseys to be auctioned off throughout the match. In addition, the jerseys of Guzman,
Lauren Gallets and
Romy Schwaiger will be auctioned off online with bidding ending next week.
Like always, IUPUI students are admitted for free with a valid JagTag while adult tickets are just $5. Children 12-and-under are $5 and kids 4-and-under are admitted for free.
