Tyler Keever notched his third shutout of the season as IUPUI rolled past Butler, 3-0 in front of 1,106 fans at Kuntz Stadium on Tuesday night. The victory snapped a nine-game winless streak and was the first over the Bulldogs since 2001.
"The key thing is that it's going to come. I told the guys, don't chase two or three goals, just chase one," IUPUI Head Coach
Isang Jacob said. "Welcome back Ian Block.
"We've been gone for eight games and finally got home. Those games prepared us for today. It prepared us for today and the conference games that are to come."
Having not played at home since Aug. 29, the Jaguars looked comfortable early, getting the game's first goal in the 21st minute with senior
Matt Guy starting the play. The IUPUI forward played the ball ahead towards Butler (5-4-1) goalkeeper Andy Holte, who was unable to corral the ball at the top of the 18. Block came sprinting in and took the ball in stride before angling a shot just inside the left post for his first collegiate goal.
"The keeper came out and the scouting report said he wasn't good with his hands, so I wasn't going to stop," Block said. "It was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders and everything went silent."
Block made it 2-0 in the 26th minute, thanks again to Guy and senior
Yogi Snider. Snider played the ball into Block who took care of business from there after the Butler defense froze, thinking the attacker was offsides.
After building the 2-0 lead, IUPUI (2-5-2) was seemingly content to weather a Butler offensive storm and hopefully escape with a win. The first 10 minutes of the second half saw a number of quality chances for the guests including Adekunle Oluyedun misfiring on a breakaway chance and Blake Leyden missing on a shot from in close.
"We just got our composure and relaxed. Our defense held tight and I made a couple saves and then we were fine," Keever said of the second half.
"We've not lost any game where we've had a lead," Jacob said. "We had to throw the first punch. We've not played well when we've gotten down."
It was Keever who dazzled the crowd in the second half including a sprawling stop of a Leyden laser beam seemingly headed for the upper corner of the goal. However, the IUPUI goalkeeper pushed the ball over the crossbar for one of his four saves.
Keever collected his ninth career shutout on Tuesday.
"Tyler Keever is unbelievable. He's one of the players I'm recommending to the MLS combine. He can play at the next level," Jacob said.
Senior
Perez Agaba added late insurance with his second goal of the year in the 81st minute, thanks to a couple of fortuitous bounces. Snider's pass deflected off a Butler defender, giving Agaba green space out to the right. The Uganda-native worked past a pair of defender before sliding a soft goal past BU reserve goalkeeper Jon Dawson.
Butler outshot the Jaguars 18-12 overall, but put just five on frame. Leyden led all players with five tries and
Kyle Hyland attempted three for IUPUI. The three-goal outburst was a welcome sight for the Jaguars, who had been blanked in seven of 10 games and four-in-a-row coming into Tuesday's match. Block's first goal snapped a string of more than 435 straight minutes without an IUPUI tally.
IUPUI will continue the three-game homestand on Saturday when it hosts UMKC in Summit League action at 2:00 p.m. at Kuntz Stadium.
