CARMEL, Ind. - The IUPUI men's soccer team squandered a golden opportunity on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 3-1 decision to Oral Roberts in Summit League action at Murray Stadium on the Carmel High School campus. While a win would have helped the Jags ascend to the top of the league standings, the loss dropped them to the middle of the pack with just one game left to play.

"The key thing is that we were not disciplined. To be quite honest, I was very, very disappointed at the effort we gave at the field, knowing full well we have to take care of the home games," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "I put that back on the leadership of the seniors. This is something that means a lot to them and they did not get that taken care of."

Despite dominating the attack for most of the game, it was Oral Roberts (5-9-1, 2-2-1 Summit) that made the most of limited chances. The Golden Eagles went in front in the 37th minute on a brilliant strike from Paul Oliver. The ORU attacker drilled a shot from nearly 25 yards out, over the head of IUPUI goalkeeper Tyler Keever and just under the crossbar for his first goal of the season.

IUPUI (6-9-2, 2-2-1 Summit) got even before halftime when senior Yogi Snider tallied his first goal of the season. Junior Kyle Hyland served a ball across the ORU box to Snider, who headed the ball down and over the endline from his station on the far post in the 42nd minute.

The Jaguars went down 2-1 in the 51st minute on a strike from Elias Smirlis. Keever came well off his line to challenge Marco Hernandez for a ball just inside the top right corner of the penalty box. When the two became tangled, the ball came free to Smirlis who calmly drilled a shot into the middle of the net for his first score of the year.

IUPUI caught a break in the 58th minute when Oliver was sent off the field with a red card for a retaliatory kick on Snider in front of the referee. The Jaguars outshot ORU 5-0 playing with a man advantage, but the sides were evened in the 81st minute when Joshio Sandoval was issued a red card for a reckless challenge along the sideline.

ORU's Aaron Birk capped the scoring with just 2:51 to play when he beat Keever to a ball near midfield and rolled a 40-yard shot into the empty net for his fifth score of the season.

"We didn't listen to what we were asked to do," Jacob said. "We didn't trust each other and we didn't believe in what the gameplan was.:

IUPUI outshot ORU 19-9 and held the Golden Eagles without a corner kick. Matt Guy, Tyler Drumm and Jeff Keyler paced the Jaguars with three shots each. ORU goalkeeper Nick Petolick made six saves while Keever made just one stop in the loss.

Hyland nearly opened the game's scoring less than 10 minutes in when his free kick from the top of the 18 bent over ORU's five man wall and grazed off the top of the crossbar. Drumm also almost tallied in the first half but had a header attempt pushed wide by Petolick.

The loss snapped IUPUI's two-game winning streak and dropped the Jaguars to 5-2 at home this season.

IUPUI will cap the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 5 when it heads to Rochester, Mich. to take on Oakland in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
