VERMILLION, S.D. - Senior
Chelsi McHenry notched her first career multi-goal game, tallying in the 86th and 88th minutes to help IUPUI escape with a 2-2 double overtime draw against South Dakota at the USD Soccer Field on Sunday. IUPUI (1-7-4, 0-1-1 Summit) yielded a pair of first half goals and had to come from behind to claim its fourth tie of the season.
"I'm at a loss," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "I'd like to think we're doing the right things, going out and playing good soccer, but we still need to go out and make our own breaks and do the things to win the game.
"I'm happier with the tie than I would've been with a loss, but we should've won this game."
The Jaguars gave away a gift in the game's 10th minute, giving USD (1-7-3, 1-0-1 Summit) an own goal to open the scoring. In the 33rd minute, the host Coyotes went ahead 2-0 when Morgan Kayvan tallied her first score of the year, executing a nifty give-and-go with teammate Alex Pantze on the play.
"We go from being in charge of the game to down a goal, just like that. They didn't have opportunities in our end at all in the first half," Johnson said. "Then we shot ourselves in the foot by being offsides when we didn't have to be offsides. We can't have those mistakes.
"I just laid into them at halftime for the first time all year. I don't want to do that and I don't like doing that, but I felt like it was needed."
IUPUI outshot USD 7-4 in the first half and 17-13 for the game, but needed more than 85 minutes before finally scoring. McHenry's first goal came with just 4:36 left in regulation when she scored on a header from the top of the box, assisted by
Kristin Pierce on the play. With just 2:30 to play, McHenry got loose on a breakaway after freshman
Anna Rode played her forward. The Fort Wayne-native finished the play, slotting a shot past USD's Mackenzie Viktor for the equalizer.
For McHenry, it was her second and third goals of the year and fourth and fifth of her IUPUI career. She is now tied for second on the team with three goals and Pierce took over the team lead with three assists.
In the first overtime, IUPUI could only muster a
Sarah Wong attempt, although it could've easily been the game-winner. Senior
Megan Hock rolled a cross through the USD box and neither Wong or
Alicia Brock could get a finish on it, keeping the game going. The Coyotes fired three shots on frame in overtime, all of which Guzman plucked cleanly. In the second stanza, both McHenry and Wong put shots on target, leading to Viktor saves.
Viktor made nine stops for USD while Guzman made five saves for the Jaguars in relief of
Kristin Haseley. IUPUI's 11 shots on goal were a season-high and the Jags scored multiple goals in a game for the fifth time this year. The tie also snapped IUPUI's 11-game road losing streak, dating back to last September.
The Jags also played overtime for the third time in four matches, going 0-1-2 in those outcomes.
IUPUI will return home for a two-game Summit League homestand, beginning against North Dakota State on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m. at Kuntz Stadium. The match is part of Super Jaguars Week, presented by Indiana Members Credit Union. The weekend will conclude with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff with South Dakota State on Sunday at Kuntz.
