INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI women’s tennis team was back on the court on Friday against in-state foe Ball State, but the Cardinals captured the doubles point and took five of the six singles matches to defeat the Jaguars, 6-1, at Five Seasons Sports Club.

 

The lone win in singles for the Jags came from Shelby Hullett in No. 1 play, who overcame a one-set deficit to register the victory.

 

Hullett fell behind with a 6-4 setback in the opening set, before rallying to win the second set, 7-6. In the race to 10 points to determine the winner, Hullett used the momentum gained from the second-set triumph to cruise to a 10-3 win in the tiebreaker.

 

In doubles play, Hullett teamed up with Lee Matthews in the No. 1 slot but the duo fell short, 8-4. Vanessa Whyte and Danielle Haefele kept IUPUI in the hunt to steal the doubles point with a tough 8-6 win in No. 2 play, but an 8-2 loss in No. 3 doubles action closed out the doubles point in the Cardinals favor.

 

For the rest of singles action, Whyte fell to Georgina Thomson (6-1, 6-3), Haefele fell short in No. 3 action (6-0, 6-1), Matthews dropped her match to Kylee Johnson (6-0, 6-2), and Jesika Bays was unable to come out on top against Kristel Sanders (6-3, 6-0).

 

Bailey Maryfield played in her first singles match of the season at the No. 6 spot and lost the decision to Paolo Rodriguez in straight sets.

 

The loss drops the Jaguars to 0-3 on the season, but IUPUI will look to capture its first win on Saturday, Jan. 29, when it hosts Bowling Green at 6 p.m. at Five Seasons Sports Club.
