CHARLESTON, Ill. – Competing in its first meet of the weekend, the IUPUI men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for seven individual victories and two relay triumphs, but both the men's and women's teams fell to Eastern Illinois by scores of 135-67 and 105-100, respectively.
Tyler McGowan and Lindsey Hurst each were two-time winners on the day to lead the Jags.
McGowan was victorious in both the 400 individual medley and the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 4:16.52 and 4:54.95, respectively. McGowan's mark of 4:16.52 in the 400 IM was not only good enough to win by almost six seconds, but it was the sixth-fastest mark in program history.
The other individual win on the men's side came in the 1000 freestyle, where
Steven Bretscher bested the field with a winning time of 10:13.77.
Hurst swept the 50 and 100 freestyle on the women's side touching the wall in times of 25.33 and 56.20, respectively, while Katelyn Cato and Lizzie Bourgeois were the other individual winners.
Cato captured the individual win in the 200 freestyle at 2:00.33, while Bourgeois was victorious in the 100 butterfly at 1:00.61.
Both the men's and women's 200 freestyle quartets registered wins with the women's team winning by the slimmest of margins. The women's team trailed heading into the final 50 meters by .75 seconds, but Kelly Loftus made up the deficit with a split of 25.83 to lift the group to a victory by .06 seconds.
Contrary to the women's team, the men's group made up a one-second difference in the second leg, before
Michael Steurer sealed the win in the third leg en route to a time of 1:32.76.
Both teams are back in the pool on Saturday, Jan. 29, when they travel north to take on Valparaiso at 2 p.m.
