RALLY COMES UP SHORT AS WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO SIU-EDWARDSVILLE, 4-3

Shelby Hullet and Lee Matthews teamed up for a doubles win before winning singles matches

INDIANAPOLIS – For the second straight match, the IUPUI women’s tennis team came up just short and dropped a tough 4-3 decision to SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday afternoon. Shelby Hullett and Lee Matthews picked up pair of wins on the day to lead the Jags with the duo teaming up to win their No. 1 doubles match prior to capturing singles wins.

In doubles action, Hullet and Matthews were in a tight match, which had to be decided by a tiebreaker. The duo persevered with a 10-5 win in the tiebreaker to give the Jags a leg up. Unfortunately for IUPUI, the duo of Vanessa Whyte and Danielle Haefele fell by a score of 8-3 in No. 2 doubles, before Jesika Bays and Alisha Cummings dropped their doubles match, 8-6.

Despite losing the hard-fought doubles point, Bays bounced back in No. 6 singles action with a decisive 6-3, 6-0, win.

Matthews dropped the first set in her No. 5 singles match, 6-3, but reversed the score in the second set to send the match to a decisive third set. In the third set, Matthews broke serve on Joanna Corkern and used that break to win the set, 6-4.

Haefele and Cummings were unable to come up victorious in No. 4 and No. 3 matches, respectively, but Hullett used a three-set win in No. 2 singles action to pick up her second win of the day. After winning the first set in dominating fashion, 6-2, Hullett tried to end a tight second set in a tiebreaker, but Maggie Boeckman was able to push through with a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker, sending the match into a third set. Even with the momentum at her side, Boeckman could not capitalize as Hullett returned to first-set form with a convincing 6-1 third-set triumph.

In No. 1 singles play, Whyte struggled in the opening set falling by a 6-1 margin, however, she retaliated with a 6-4 second-set win to even things up at one set apiece. The attempt at a comeback similar to Matthews was derailed, however, as Whyte lost the third set, 6-3.

The women’s team is back in action Jan. 28 and 29, when it welcomes a pair of Mid-American Conference opponents in Ball State and Bowling Green to Indianapolis for two weekend matches. The Jags will open up with the Cardinals on Jan. 28, before taking on the Falcons on Jan. 29.
