INDIANAPOLIS – In its first meet in more than five weeks, the IUPUI women’s swimming and diving team kicked off 2011 with a win, while the men’s team placed fourth at the House of Champions Relays Monday afternoon at the IU Natatorium.
“For our first meet since December, I thought we performed pretty well,” said head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach
Jim Shuck. “We had some individuals really stand out today and our challenge from here on out will be to perform at a high level leading up to the Summit League Championships.”
For the women’s team, their depth was one of the keys to picking up the victory. Lindsay Bourgeois, and
Lindsey Hurst each were a part of three victories, while
Katelyn Cato and
Kelly Loftus were parts of two victories to lead the team.
Bourgeois,
Amanda Janda, and Loftus got things started on the right track with a victory in the 3x100 butterfly, where the trio’s time of 3:04.53 bested the next closest time by more than two seconds.
Outside of the opening win, the quartet of
Holly Reed,
Karen Balko,
Tori Taylor, and Loftus touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle relay, while Cato, Taylor, Bourgeois, and Hurst also triumphed in the 400 medley relay. However, two of the Jags more impressive times came in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays.
Despite finishing second in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 8:12.46, the time moved the group of Cato, Bourgeois, Hurst, and
Carrie Ford into seventh in the school record books. The same group with
Alvina Brown subbing in for Ford also moved into the record books swimming the 11th-best time in school history while on their way to a first-place time of 3:43.78 in the 400 freestyle relay.
On the men’s side, the two best performances came in the 3x500 freestyle relay and the mixed 800 relay drill.
Both teams are back in action on Friday, Jan. 21 at the IU Natatorium against both Saint Louis and Valparaiso. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
