VERMILLION, S.D. - Junior
Megan Hock notched her third career multi-goal game and freshman
Sarah Carlisle added some late insurance as the Jaguars knocked off future Summit League foe South Dakota, 3-0 on Saturday. Freshman
Kristin Haseley earned the shutout in net in her first career start as IUPUI claimed its first win of the young season.
South Dakota (1-2-1) has already accepted a spot and will begin Summit League play next season.
IUPUI gave them a rude greeting from the outset though, piling up shots until Hock finally broke through in the 26th minute. Junior
Chelsi McHenry played a long lead pass forward into the direction of freshman
Ashley Doreski and Hock. Doreski got tangled with the USD center back, giving Hock a clean look from just inside the 18-yard box, that the junior finished.
"We came out with a goal of just getting some shots today. We wanted to play the ball forward and get in behind them to create some opportunities. Once Megan (Hock) got that first one, everyone kind of relaxed a little more," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "(We) realized that we were capable of scoring and putting goals away."
"We knew once we scored, something would click," Hock said. "Today it did, obviously."
Hock joined Karrie Reising and Tara Latella as just the third player in school history to amass 20 career goals in the game's 26th minute. She wasn't done though as the Greenwood-native made it 2-0 just 74 seconds into the second half. This time,
Alicia Brock set the table with a cross to earn her first assist of the year.
"I was just in the right place at the right time," Hock said.
IUPUI (1-3) kept the shutout intact, although a little luck played a role in keeping the Coyotes off the scoreboard. Jenny Teslow had two quality scoring chances for the hosts, but pushed one shot wide and saw the other ring off the crossbar and back onto the field of play.
The Jaguars' final score came in the 72nd minute when Carlisle was on the receiving end of a
Sarah Wong corner kick and headed a shot into the open net.
"It was awesome, to see the shortest player on the field get a goal on a header," Hock said. "That was just kind of a relief to us at that point, getting a three goal lead."
IUPUI outshot USD 23-10 overall and 13-3 on frame. Jen Ogren made 10 saves for the Coyotes while Haseley needed three in the victory.
"It went very well with her back there today," junior back
Margaret Allgeier said of Haseley's debut. "She was very communicative back there and was loud and asserted herself."
"She kept things clean and picked things up before they became dangerous," Johnson added. "She made the saves when she needed to, which was big for us. She did a good job out there today."
Carlisle and Wong led the Jaguars with four shot attempts each and Hock fired three on Saturday. IUPUI's 23 shot attempts were six more than the Jaguars had in its first three matches combined.
IUPUI will cap the two-game road trip on Monday when it takes on Nebraska in a 1:00 p.m. clash in Lincoln. The Labor Day contest will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
