INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team continued its recent dominance over crosstown rival Butler with a 3-1 win over the visiting Bulldogs at Kuntz Stadium on Wednesday night. The Jaguars struck early in each half as IUPUI defeated Butler for the third straight season.
"It's definitely a situation where we've been playing well against them the past three years," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "It's unfortunate that we're not continuing the series."
It took IUPUI (4-6) less than five minutes to get on the scoreboard as senior
Natalie Holland set up freshman
Sarah Colby's second career goal in the early going. Holland drove a cross from the right side into the penalty box to the rookie, who volleyed a shot past BU goalkeeper Olivia Walter and into the right side of the net.
Butler (3-8) missed some opportunities in the attacking third to knot the match as Rachel Melendez had one attempt go just high of the crossbar and a second chance from the left side hit off the crossbar in the 20th minute. The Bulldogs finally capped a flurry of action in the 33rd minute with the neutralizer though.
Anna Ventimiglia put a shot on frame, forcing freshman goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman to make a sprawling save. The rebound went back to Ventimiglia, who put a rocket on net that was cleared off the back line by senior
Kelly Williams. Given a third chance, Rachel Sklarski roofed a shot for her first score of the season.
However, IUPUI answered in less than a minute to take the lead for good. Junior
Chelsi McHenry lofted a gorgeous lead pass to senior
Cara Hartman, who was in the right spot when Walter got tangled with one of her defenders. With the ball at her feet, Hartman made the easy finish to make it 2-1 in the 34th minute.
"I was in the right place at the right time," Hartman said. "It was a great ball from Chelsi. More than anything, it felt great to go out and score that for my teammates."
"Cara is a kid that works very hard. She makes great runs. She has one of the best abilities of anyone to make a read and make a run as the ball is coming down the field," Johnson said. "Chelsi played a great ball and Cara did a nice job of bending her run back so she could see the play in front of her."
IUPUI added insurance in the 48th minute to set the final margin. Junior
Alicia Brock beat her defender inside the right edge of the 18-yard box and was pulled down from behind as she went to goal. The Jaguars were awarded a penalty kick, which resulted in freshman
Kristin Pierce's first career score.
Neither team posed a major threat the rest of the way as Butler finished the match with a 15-10 advantage in shot attempts. Guzman made five saves and earned her first collegiate win.
"Our defense is strong. It's always been strong," Hartman said. "With (Guzman) in there, it kind of jelled tonight. (Guzman) played really well tonight."
Senior
Amanda Snyder paced the Jaguars with three shot attempts and Colby and Pierce each attempted two.
