DETROIT - The IUPUI men's soccer team closed its exhibition slate with a 2-0 loss at Detroit on Saturday afternoon, ending the preseason with a 1-1 mark. Detroit's Ya Ya Toure scored the game-winner in the 18th minute and Sam Seppo added insurance in the 50th minute.
Sophomore
Alex Mannen got the start in net and yielded the go-ahead goal when UD's Adam Philp setup Toure's goal from inside the six-yard box on the left side. Philp began the play by collecting an errant pass near midfield and beating a pair of IUPUI defenders before laying off a pass to his fellow attacker.
Keever took over to start the second half and was beaten on a rebound goal less than five minutes into the second frame. UD's Nate Robinson had a free kick ring off the post and Seppo was able to get a touch on the rebound to push a goal past Keever.
Sophomore
Emile Garcia had the Jaguars' best two scoring chances of the day but was unable to capitalize. On the first, Garcia missed an attempt on the near post and later, Garcia was unable to get a shot past UD goalkeeper Martin Robertson after getting free in the attacking third.
"It could've been a 2-2 game, but mental mistakes got us," IUPUI Head Coach
Steve Franklin said. "I think Detroit had the better energy and they obviously made better decisions on the ball.
"Detroit was the better team today."
Franklin used his entire roster on Saturday in an effort to fine tune the roster before the regular season, however, sophomore Yoshio Sandoval was the only newcomer in the starting lineup.
IUPUI will open the regular season on Sept. 3 when they take on UNC-Asheville in the opening match of the University of Kentucky Invitational. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m..
