OXFORD, Ohio - Coming off a tough one-point loss at Miami (Ohio) on Saturday night, Head Coach
Ron Hunter's team seeks redemption when it takes on No. 25 San Diego State in the Oxford Subregional of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic at Millett Hall on Sunday night. Sunday's game marks the second time in four outings that the Jaguars will face a nationally ranked opponent to start the season.
IUPUI opened the year with an 86-56 loss at No. 12 Gonzaga in the opening round of the CBE Classic.
On Saturday night, junior
Alex Young dialed up a game-high 23 points, but he and the Jaguars fell short in a 59-58 defeat. IUPUI (1-2) trailed by six points with 50 seconds left, but still managed to have a crack to win it in regulation. Junior
Stephen Thomas came up with a pair of key buckets late, including a three in front of the Jaguars' bench with just 10 seconds left to make it 59-58. IUPUI then got a turnover on a long inbounds pass, leaving just 0.6 seconds left. However, Young's 35-foot prayer as time expired was well left of target.
Young hit 9-of-22 shots, including three threes, and grabbed seven rebounds in the loss. Thomas came off the bench to score 11 points in 33 minutes work.
Miami was led by Julian Mavunga's 17 points and seven boards as the RedHawks outrebounded IUPUI 37-29 and outscored the Jaguars 34-20 in the paint.
SDSU (3-0) looks to climb in the national polls on Monday after winning at Gonzaga, 79-76 on Tuesday. The Aztecs knocked off Green Bay on Saturday night, 79-70, erasing a 22-point first half deficit in the process. Kawhi Leonard is SDSU's big gun, coming in averaging 20.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
IUPUI comes in 0-8 all-time against ranked opponents. The contest will be the 100th game played in the career of senior
John Ashworth.
