TULSA, Okla. - The IUPUI men's soccer team gave up a pair of goals in the final eight minutes of the first half as the Jaguars fell at Oral Roberts on Saturday night, 2-0. IUPUI outshot the hosts 15-14, but was unable to find the back of the net for the second time in as many matches.
Sterling Copeland fueled the ORU (3-6-2, 1-1-1 Summit) offense as he set up the game's first goal and scored the second.
"ORU killed us right at the end of the first half," IUPUI Head Coach
Steve Franklin said. "We played very undisciplined soccer and our defensive effort lacked a lot to be desired. The difference in the game was their speed.
"We couldn't match their speed or their energy."
Copeland fed Jon Gann for the eventual game-winner in the 38th minute when the duo played give-and-go along the right sideline, later resulting in a blast past junior goalkeeper
Tyler Keever. Later, with just 26 seconds left before halftime, a turnover near midfield resulted in Copeland weaving through the Jaguars' defense before hitting a rocket past Keever for some early insurance.
"We gave the ball away and they ended up splitting our two interior defenders before he scored," Franklin said. "If they tracked turnovers, I'd say we had at least 50 tonight. We had some good scoring chances, but it was what we did between shots that beat us.
"Just too many giveaways and too many turnovers."
Offensively, sophomore
Kyle Hyland led the Jaguars with four shot attempts and put two on frame. Junior
Perez Agaba was credited with three shot attempts and
Jeff Keyler and
Mason Cassady tried two each. IUPUI's (5-6, 2-1 Summit) best scoring chance came in the 77th minute, beginning with a Hyland strike that got knocked down before it got to goal. Agaba put the loose ball on target, forcing Andrew Techanchuk to make the stop which bounded back to the Jaguars' striker. Agaba's final attempt went high of the crossbar though.
Techanchuk finished with six saves while Keever made one in the defeat.
"We suffered from reading our own headlines tonight," Franklin said. "It's unfortunate because Oral Roberts was essentially playing for their Summit League lives today and we didn't take advantage. Kudos to them for getting the result."
IUPUI will continue Summit League action next Friday when it treks up I-69 to play IPFW at 7:00 p.m..
