INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team ran its season-long unbeaten streak to five straight as the Jaguars squeaked past Wright State 2-1 at Park Tudor High School on Tuesday night. Sophomore
Ryan Robinson scored the Jaguars' game-winner for the second straight outing and senior
Nate Ohmer also tallied in the win.
"It was really nice to see the depth come through and win a game for us," IUPUI Head Coach Steve Franklin said. Â
For the second straight match, it was the IUPUI (9-6-1) reserves that hooked up to net the game-winner, this time coming in the 74th minute. Sophomore
Denny Moynihan played a restart from deep in Wright State territory and found the head of Robinson, who had positioned himself about 10 yards out. The 6-foot-4 Robinson angled his shot just inside the right post for his third career goal, all of which have been game-winners.
"It was great service by Denny into Ryan for the goal," Franklin said. "Denny did a great job stepping in late on a cold evening and getting service in. Credit Brock (Brungard) and Ryan though. They came in and provided us a lift up top."
The same duo almost hooked up again just over two minutes later, but Moynihan's lofted restart went just beyond Robinson and wide of the back post.
IUPUI had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the game's 25th minute on a fantastic strike by Ohmer. Sophomore
Kyle Hyland carried the ball forward before laying the ball off to the senior midfielder. Ohmer hammered a shot from nearly 35 yards out that found the right side of the net for his second goal of the year.
Wright State (4-10-1) tied the score with just 13.2 seconds left in the half though. Drake Stewart got loose on a quick counter attack and played a nifty heel pass to Jordan Haggit who was trailing the play. Haggit then blazed a shot through the Jaguars' retreating defense and past
Alex Mannen for his second tally of the season.
"It was unfortunate that we gave up the counter late in the half because that really knocked us back on our heels," Franklin said. "Maybe that was a good lesson to learn this late in the season though. We just didn't close out the half and protect the lead."Â
As the match wore on, IUPUI opted to play more possession and tried to create quality chances, rather than quantity of chances. Both
Matt Guy and
Mason Cassady had good looks early in the second half, but missed high of the mark.
WSU was limited offensively Mannen needed just three saves in the victory. He also benefited from a team save in the first half as Justin Circle had a shot cleared off the back line by an IUPUI defender. WSU's Jacob Bye made two stops in the loss.
"For the most part, I was pleased with our backs," Franklin said. "
Joe Meyer had a real nice run in the back for us tonight."
Haggit led all players with three shot attempts while three different Jaguars attempted two shots.
IUPUI will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 30 when it heads out to Kansas City to play UMKC in Summit League action. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. between the top two teams in the league.
