INDIANAPOLIS - Junior
Megan Hock continued her penchant for game-winning goals on Sunday when her score with just 1:52 left sent IUPUI to a 2-1 Summit League victory over Oral Roberts at Kuntz Stadium. It was Hock's team-high seventh goal of the year and pushed her school record total of game-winners to 14.
The play started when
Sarah Wong threw the ball in to senior midfielder
Natalie Holland, stationed in front of the Jaguars bench. Holland immediately bent a ball towards the far post where Hock was able to get a boot on the ball and redirect it past ORU goalkeeper Amanda Wheeler. It was the second assists of the season for both Wong and Holland.
ORU (7-6-1, 2-2-1 Summit) took an early lead in the 18th minute when reigning Summit League Offensive Player of the Week Jennifer Abernathy netted her fifth score of the year. Maria Grados chipped a lead pass over the IUPUI defensive four, setting up Abernathy's rolled shot to the far post past freshman goalkeeper
Kristin Haseley.
IUPUI (8-8, 4-2 Summit) knotted the score less than four minutes later though on a brilliant strike by junior
Alicia Brock. Junior
Chelsi McHenry slid the ball out wide to Brock, who angled a ball past Wheeler and into the side net for her third score of the year. McHenry's assist was her fourth of the season.
Both teams had numerous chances to take the lead prior to Hock's game-winner.
In the 76th minute, IUPUI had a slew of chances go by the wayside, keeping the game tied. The play began when Wheeler made an initial stop of a Hock attempt and then Holland had a header attempt knocked down just in front of the ORU goal. From there, it appeared as though an ORU defender covered the ball in an effort to stop the flurry.
IUPUI was awarded an indirect kick from eight yards out as nearly every ORU field player lined the mouth of the net. Both
Ashley Doreski and
Megan Hock had attempts knocked down before Wheeler was able to cover up and thwart the rally.
The defensive stand clearly shifted the momentum as ORU dominated the next 10 minutes. Mary-Kate Halsmer had a shot glance off the crossbar in the 86th minute and Tatum Lynn had an attempt go just wide of the right post just over a minute later.
IUPUI used a quick throw-in to finally tilt the field back in its direction before Wong's second throw setup the game-winner.
ORU outshot IUPUI 19-14 and 6-5 on frame. Abernathy led all players with five shot attempts off the bench and Hock led the Jags with four tries. Freshmen
Sarah Colby and
Kristin Pierce both had two shot attempts in the win.
Haseley made five saves while Wheeler was credited with two stops for the Golden Eagles. The ORU defense also earned a team save when a
Cara Hartman mishit was cleared off the back line in the final minute of the first half.
IUPUI will return to action on Friday, Oct. 22 when it heads north to play Summit League leading Oakland at 7:00 p.m.. That match will be played at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac, Mich..
