FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's soccer team waited until nearly the last possible moments to get going but was able to survive with an improbable 2-1 double overtime win at IPFW on Friday night. Sophomore
Mason Cassady forced overtime with a goal in the 87th minute and junior
Perez Agaba won it with a score in the 101st.
"We were kind of lackluster for the first 70 or so minutes," IUPUI Head Coach Steve Franklin said. "It was weird because they scored but we seemed to gain confidence in the last 25 minutes. We threw caution to the wind once we got down and started playing with four front runners.
"After we scored, we kind of stuck with it and it worked. This was a big, big win though because they always play people tough up here."
The score sheet was riddled with more cards than anything until IPFW's (2-11, 0-3 Summit) Max Touloute gave the Mastodons a 1-0 lead with just 9:43 left to play. The 'Dons top sniper dribbled across the field before unloading a strike from the top of the 18 that got past IUPUI (6-6, 3-1 Summit) goalkeeper
Alex Mannen for the game's initial score.Â
However, IUPUI caught a break almost two minutes later when IPFW's Mitch Falkenstern was sent off with a straight red for rough play. Shortly thereafter, the Jags took advantage.Â
Freshman
Jeff Keyler notched his first of two assists when he setup Cassady's first career goal, knotting the score with just 3:19 left in regulation. Keyler slotted a pass to the Bloomington-native, who was able to chip a shot just over IPFW goalkeeper Donovan Dowling to the far side for the equalizer.Â
"Mason gave us a spark, even before he scored the goal," Franklin said.
In the extra time, Mannen came up with a fantastic stop of a Touloute breakaway to keep the Jaguars in the game before Agaba later won it.Â
"Credit (Alex) Mannen, he was shaky at first but once he got his feet on the ground, he was really good. He made a game saving stop on (Max) Touloute to keep us in it," Franklin said.
The winner came off assist from Keyler and Snider, beginning with a restart from the far side of the field. Snider drilled the restart into danger where Keyler redirected a pass back to the near post. From there, Agaba swooped in for his fourth goal of the season and fifth career game-winner. Â
Agaba and the Jags outshot IPFW 15-12 as he, Snider and
Kyle Hyland attempted a team-high three each. Touloute led all players with four shot attempts, putting one on frame. Mannen made two saves and benefited from two team saves while Dowling made four stops in the loss.
The win advanced IUPUI's record to 3-1 in Summit League play.
"Nine points should put us in (the league tournament)," Franklin said. "I don't know of too many times that a team has gotten nine points and not gotten in."
IUPUI will now return home to host Cleveland State on Sunday in non-conference action at Kuntz Stadium. The Jaguars will kickoff immediately following the women's match with Oral Roberts.
