INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman goalkeeper Giselle Guzman registered her first career shutout and junior forward Alicia Brock tallied her first goal of the year as the Jaguars opened Summit League play with a 1-0 win over Southern Utah on Friday night at Kuntz Stadium. The win was the Jaguars third-in-a-row, all having come on the home pitch.

IUPUI (5-6, 1-0 Summit) was on the attack from the outset, recording the game's first four shots in just over 10 minutes. Freshman Sarah Wong just missed getting her first career goal in the game's ninth minute and Brock had a header cleared off the back line by a Southern Utah (3-5-1, 0-1 Summit) defender in the 11th minute.

The Jaguars dominated the action for the majority of the first half with the trio of Brock, Megan Hock and Sarah Colby patrolling the attacking third.

Brock finally broke the ice in the 38th minute, thanks to an assist from Colby. Colby carried the ball up the right side and drove a low cross into the 18-yard box, finding Brock's feet. The Carmel-native was able to turn on her defender and place a shot past SUU goalkeeper Charly Booth for the game's only score.

"(Brock) said that the lid is finally off the goal down there," Johnson said. "She definitely is a player that other teams come out and try to eliminate from our attack. Other teams focus on her and think that if they can stop her, they can beat us. Fortunately, we've got two more really good forwards in (Sarah) Colby and (Megan) Hock, so if you key in on her too much, one of those others is going to put a ball in the back of the net.

"It didn't happen tonight, but (Colby & Hock) were both really dangerous within the attack."

IUPUI finished the match with a 17-12 advantage on shot attempts, including a 10-3 edge in the second half.

Southern Utah's best scoring chance of the game came in the final minute of the first half when Riley Bassett put an initial strike on frame that Guzman deflected away, but was left stranded well off her back line. SUU's Sabrina Hernandez followed with a rebound attempt that never made it to goal as it was blocked by a defender. The half then ended with an offsides call that resulted in an SUU attacker bowling over Guzman after the whistle.

"That's part of the game," Guzman said. "We've got to take our hits and hopefully not get hurt. Coach told me before the game I needed to come out strong and big and control my box. I'm feeling more comfortable with the upperclassmen in the back and it helps just playing."

Guzman finished the night with five saves and earned her second straight win.

"(Guzman) stepped in and did a great job for us," Johnson said. "She got the opportunity to step in and show what she can do and she's taken advantage of it. That's all you can ask and she's been up to the task."

Hock led all players with four shot attempts and Wong had three tries. Friday marked just the third time this season that IUPUI outshot the opposition.

"They're going to come in and play pretty hard and our girls knew that coming in. Aside from one flurry in the first half, I thought our girls did a good job of keeping things in front of them.

"I thought that we were able to get around the corner on them on both sides of the field," Johnson said. "We were able to create opportunities, but we just couldn't find the end of some of those balls. Hopefully we'll start getting on the end of some of those, but we're getting there."

The Jaguars will cap the five-game homestand on Sunday when it hosts UMKC at 1:00 p.m. at Kuntz Stadium. Like always, IUPUI students are admitted for free with a valid JagTag.
